Burnt Popcorn Smell...

The other morning, hubby was helping pack lunches and was popping some popcorn so Victoria had a snack at school. Well, while the popcorn was popping we became a bit, um, distracted, and the popcorn burned--just on the verge of fire. It stunk up the place pretty good, and my t-shirt (the lime green one

) actually smelled of burnt popcorn all day.
However, the place that got "stunk" the worst was the inside of the microwave. Now, every time I open the microwave door, stale burnt popcorn stink wafts across the kitchen. I have it sprayed down with bleach right now hoping to scrub off some of the dark-yellow stains (seriously it looks like little microwave people smoked cigarettes in there for about 15 years) but I am hoping another BNr may have become distracted while popping microwave popcorn and run into a similar problem.
Thanks.

Never tried this, but it works for fridge odors: maybe a box of baking soda left in there overnight a few nights with the door closed?

Oooh! Can't believe I forgot the old reliable baking soda! If the bleach doesn't do the trick I'll be sure to try that.
I would have no luck trying to keep people microwave-free in my house for two days, though, so I'd have to hope one overnight would work.

I figured just overnight for a few nights, in between using it during the day.

Well see aren't I about as sharp as a Pop Tart.

OH I did the same thing..well, part of it anyway...I hit the ummm baked potatoe instead of popcorn..
microwaving w/o contacts...I put a red post it on the popcorn now...
it was almost near flaming when I realized what I'd done..
it still has the stains inside it from the smoke, but the smell eventually went away..
Good Luck!

How about putting a glass with a mixture of either water/vinegar or water/baking soda and then nuking in one minute increments. I know I clean mine by doing this with just plain water as the hot water forms a steam that loosens up anything "stuck" - maybe the vinegar or the baking soda with it will also get rid of the smell?

vanilla extract on a paper towel, sit in the microwave? Works on coolers that have had fish in them.

I was going to say Vanilla - it works in the fridge.

Wow! Great ideas. Round 1 with the baking soda went pretty well. Still not perfectly clean on the inside. I wouldn't be so finicky, but the microwave is only about 6 months old. I'll try the vanilla for the smell. The baking soda toned it down, but you can still smell it across the room if you open the door.\
I'll try the vanilla overnight.

I think that is quite likely the funniest thing you've ever posted, Waynie.

Try spraying Febreeze on a washcloth, dishrag, or paper towel and leave it in there for a while. I dunno - just a thought.

I am not ruling that out. We want to get one that fits over our stove/oven with the vent/hood thingy built into the bottom so it might just happen sooner rather than later.

Mix a cup of water with a tablespoon of lemon juice (or a slice of lemon). Using a microwave-safe glass bowl, heat until boiling and continue heating about 2 minutes. Let it stay in the microwave oven as long as possible.
(While you're doing this, wet your kitchen sponge and put it in alongside the bowl. It will disinfect your sponge.)
Let all items cool before removing.

Crush up a few charcoal brickettes in a bowl and leave it in the microwave for a few days. I've found that to work better than baking soda.
