Let's hope Radio Margaritaville stays with satellite merger

Post by dean_siu »

With The New York Post and other sources reporting that Sirius and XM will announce a merger, lets hope that Radio Margaritaville remains a part of the lineup when their programming is merged.

After this becomes official, we may need to institute an email campaign to insure this doesn't happen.

I know that I will not continue paying the $12 a month for satellite unless RM is not part of the programming package.

Depending who's going to be the CEO, I could try to use my connections as a fellow alumni of Clark (with the XM head) to keep it. :D
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.

Isn't the general consensus that people were far happier with RM programming back when it was internet only?

I've had XM radio since it's launch back in late 2001. Radio Margaritaville was the only Sirius programming that I envied (you can have Howard Stern). Maybe NFL football, but on Sunday's I'm usually in front of the TV and not listening on the radio.

Except for the probability that monthly fees may rise, this is great news for XM Parrotheads.

If I could have XM talk & Sirius music, that would be perfect.

Are satelite radio ratings published anywhere? I'd suspect RM is doing fine. Is there a limit to the number of chanels they can receive? And if so, how many vs. the number of stations currently on each XM and Sirius? Finally, does XM have anything equivalent or close to RM?

Nope...no ratings. They have no way of tracking the listening audience...at least according to an in the know RM big shot..... They only count subscribers.

It's all in the eyes of the beholder (or whoever would have the decision making power to scrap channels)...we know there's no equivalent to RM but some XM big-wig may see a similar genre/copycat station differently.... :)

Mel Karmazin, CEO of Sirius, will be CEO of the new company, with Gary Parsons, XM Chairman, becoming chairman.

A few obstacles to hurdle.

I do not think that the FCC will allow this merger. It will eliminate competition for satellite radio creating a monopoly. Also, this now allows them to charge how ever much they want for their services.

I don't think the FCC will/can get involved. Both of these stations are pay subscriber based and there isn't any monopoly since there are more than enough alternatives with regular free radio. Also, I think XM was backed by the government. I have XM and I have wanted RM since it was put on Sirius. Hopefully I'll get my wish.

Other then allowing them to transmit over airwaves I don't know how much control the FCC has over sat radio in terms of competition. I believe it would be the Justice Department that oversees stuff like mergers, monopolies and antitrust issues.

Because it is subscriber based and can not be received over the air they can not control content, that's why Howard along with Dopie and Ain't Funny, I mean Opie And Anthony :D , can say what ever they want on the air. It is much the same way with the control the FCC has over cable TV stations. If by some strange chance the Lifetime network wanted to drop the F bomb evey 10 seconds there is nothing the FCC can do. That is how shows like Rescue Me on FX and South Park can get away with profanity and showing what they do.

BTW I have nothing against Opie and Anthony, just heard that said about them once and though it was funny.

As has been posted in another thread when it comes to dumping channels a lot will depend on any overlap. I mean I doubt they will keep say 2 80's channels that play the samething. I am sure some talk channels may merge. I would also think RM would win out over any similar XM channel because of what it offers in the live shows and the personality who 'owns" RM. If they do stop RM, Jimmy will be getting paid a lot of money for doing nothing I am sure.
