Every now and then someone comes along with the power to influence culture and people. And... if those influential people happen to be capitalists, so be it. It's totally ok to me that it may just be all about the money.

Mark Twain
Oscar Wilde
Elvis Presley
Jimmy Buffett
Oprah Winfrey
Howard Stern

Yep... it's all about the money. And that's allright by me.

Wow, I've never been part of a "cult" before....

But if any of you ever ask me to drink the Kool-Aid, I'm out.
Margarita, yes, but not the Kool-Aid.

and I'm not shaving my head and wearing a toga at the airport, either...

2002 copyright...it's been around a while. I like this stuff* anyway, so if I can pick it up at the library I'll check it out, read it and do a "book report." :)

*The marketing/business aspect...not the cult part :o ...except for maybe the Parrothead cult stuff....

Ahhh........a loophole!

And I've noticed most of the concert phlock finds their way to the M'Ville shrimp/chicken trailer at the shows. Maybe that's how they "program" us. :-?

I'm all about the "cult" part, as in Buffett having a loyal and devoted following but the "branding" part is even more telling. I guess that's what separates Parrotheads from true subcultures like the Grateful Dead's Deadhead following. Buffett started out that way but soon devolved into something more closely approximating a marketing scheme.

No doubt that's part of the master plan...and they'll be tightening that grip with Landshark Lager at shows this year, too. [smilie=shifty.gif] [smilie=shock.gif]

And as Jimmy's said many times, without shame, he's running a business. It's origins are lyrics and music, but it's still a business. He answers to himself and his family, and we choose whether or not we want to be a part of it all.

I'm curious to see how the book deals with and measures "brand loyalty."

On further investigation, I see this book never made it out of hard copy. I glanced through the Amazon info and it appears to be fairly anectdotal (story-based). Anyway, here are their 7 golden rules of cult branding:

1. Consumers want to be part of a group that's different
2. Cult brand inventors show daring and determination
3. Cult brands sell lifestyles
4. Listen to the choir and create cult brand evangelists
5. Cult brands always create customer communities
6. Cult brands are inclusive
7. Cult brands promote personal freedom and draw power from their enemies

JB is listed as a case example for rules 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Other "cult brands" cited in this book include: Oprah Winfrey, Linux, Apple Computer, World Wrestling Entertainment, Volkswagen, Star Trek, Harley-Davidson and Vans.
