Credit Card Fraud UPDATE 8-31

Post by jimsig »

Just a reminder for every one to check all charges made on their credit card/bank statements. I have been the victim of this just in the past 2 weeks. I saw the 3 charges on my bank statement that I did not make so I called my bank and got them working on it. They canceled my card etc. I then noticed that the charge had an 800 number on it for customer service. I called that number and they were able to give me the phone number that the calls were placed from. I took the information to the police the next day and told them earlier that night I had filled up with gas. Ended up the kid copied my info and made 3 calls within 30 min of each other to an adult chat line. He also said he has been doing this a couple times a week for the past 2 months. No one else has come forward at this time. I am sure most banks credit back the false charges and the victims figure that is enough.

sounds like that kid has a problem that really needs to be addressed. And a great reminder to be careful and keep an eye on things.

According to the police report he also has had 3 other prior larceny issues.

obviously the problem never has been addressed. It could be drugs, bad parenting whatever. I'm not saying that he shouldn't be punished, I'm saying the system has obviously failed to reform him.

I think it's time to try a new system:

welll.... you almost have to go in and rebreak.. and rebreak again.. but for that, I'd recommend a ballpeen hammer over a bat. :D

there's no question that a ballpeen would inflict some really good damage and it' would probably do it quicker than a baseball bat too. If you're going to punish - really punish. Make it linger. Make it painful.

that's why you revisit every week for a month with the hammer... just as the bones start to set.. and either way, every time the weather changes, the kid will know it's coming 12 hours ahead of the weatherman. :D

Mine was not really a fraud but it has been a pain in the ass.

Met chippewa and mrs for dinner in Michigan for dinner. To make a long story short......I won, and paid the bill. Did Mastercard. Bill was $60 US. Hit my card after I got home for $938 CAD. That's a rather high exchange rate don't ya think? Called M/C...they screwed around and did nothing for over a month and finally we went back to that restaurant. They promised they would make right by weeks end. They did but so did their bank. Now I have a credit balance of $938.
If I contact them and have it reversed and their banks sees the error and they correct it I am back to a negative.
I am going to wait it out for a month or so and then do something.

UPDATE

Got a summons to be a witness for a 10AM hearing. Only problem is that my flight for Cancun leaves at 9AM. I was able to change the date until later this month. I will let you know how it works out.

would be okay to list the gas station you visited? i don't want to go there and take any chances.

you take a chance every time you use your card. It does not matter where. You can pull up to your neighborhood Exxon On the Run or whatever it is and just get gas and pay with a credit/debit card. And become the victim of fraud without walking into the store.

It's possible as the bad guys have these card readers that they can slip over a regular card reader in a matter of seconds which will store hundreds of credit card numbers.

Before you slide that card - look at what you're sliding it into - if it doesn't look "right" - notify the manager.

I ate breakfast at the Vegas airport last October. I had 2 bloody marys and an omelet. The bill came to $30. I gave the waitress a $5 tip so the total as $35. When I got the credit card statement the bill was $85.

It took me more than a month to get the restaurant to correct the charge.
It's a jungle out there kiddies; Have a very fruitful day.
