Help!!!

Post by MA_Buffett_Fan23 »

Hey folks! well, here I am again.. needing advice from all of you.. A few months ago I posted saying that my department in Raleigh was being eliminated and moved to Dallas, TX. I have decided to pass on that opportunity as Dallas just isn't for me. I am however in talks with my VP on moving to Covington, KY (right outside of Cincinnati). I'm currently there on a site visit and am having a hard time deciding if this is the right thing to do. I need to make a final decision by next Friday and unfortunately I'm not sure if I can make a decision that quickly.. Has anyone else ever been through this before? How do you know what the right decision is? ARRRGGGHHHH :-?

What are your options if you don't go to KY? Is Dallas the only other option?

And Christina, I'm so sorry NC didn't work out. I know how excited you were to move there. :(

Hi Christina! :P

sorry to hear the Raleigh move didn't stick
I've never been faced with such a geographic/lifestyle decision like yours..
but I've heard good things about the 'Nati-Tucky area.

If you're really comfortable with your company, it's certainly a safer leap.
Returning to New England sounds like it's a non-option, I guess?
$#@&...only Vegas again?? Padres ...gotta start believin'!Bring on '14 Spring Training!

No, Dallas is completely out of the question and so is New England.. It's either stay in NC and hope I can find a position within the few departments that are left OR take the severance package and try to find a job outside of my company.. or move to Cincy.. :-?

I actually am in the middle of a similar thing with a couple of differences:

I just took a job knowing it was in Atlanta - Leaving Colorado was something I would never have contemplated before. But the opportunity was just too good to pass up.

Now I am sitting in ATL without Mamabear. She wont be here until late June.

The only reason I did it was my best friend already was in ATL and is gonna be my boss. So I had someone to join and meet his friends.

Dont know it I would have done it without that support.

Then again, it was the job opportunity of a lifetime so I probably would have!

When would you have to move? Would accepting the position and simultaneously putting out feelers for something local, then if something good happens, declining the kentucky move work?
That's way to quick for me to make a decision like that. How would your pay transition to Kentucky COL?

well, things to consider:

a) cigarettes are much cheaper in KY than OH
b) liquor is much cheaper on the south bank of the River
c) you can save money as shoes are only required in KY from Dec-Feb
d) if you have cousins in KY, you already have a built-in dating pool...

ok, all kidding aside. Cincinatti is not a bad town, and there is a lot going on in the area. You have a major airport in CVG, so getting out to visit family back east should be pretty easy. Housing prices are not what they are on the East Coast or the Gulf Coast. Winter in OH is not the grueling, grinding, soul-numbing experience it is in the NE. And Buffett still comes to Cincy.

If you move to a new company, you start from scratch. If you are not sure about the future with your current employer, maybe this is the time to make the jump. Cost of living in Raleigh and cost of living in Cincy/CVG, is the move completely lateral or do you get a bump in pay based on regional COLA? Are they going to cover moving expenses?

Thanks folks!!

It's an all expenses paid move however my biggest obstacle is my condo that I just bought.. They will only cover the closing cost and 90 days of corporate housing.. If I don't sell my home there is no guarantee that they'll help me after the 90 days of housing is up.. I need to be up there by August and unfortunately I'm not sure I can sell my place by then.. when I bought my place in December there was a spitting image condo in the other building as mine and it was on the market for almost 300 days... I just can't afford to allow a move put me in debt...

One minute I'm all for the move.. the next minute I'm scared out of my mind and then the minute after that I'm like "hell no!! I moved to NC for a reason!" ARGGHHHHHHHHHHH :(

Yes I've been through this and ended up making the choice which looking back I'm not sure if it was the right move or not. I ended up disliking my superiors and the job but great new people so the experience still might have been worth it. My thoughts are trust your instincts. Once you have all the info, you have to be leaning one way or another even if it a tiny bit. I saw which ever way you are leaning, go for it!
