Corzine, trooper injured in Parkway crash
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 04/12/07

GANNETT STATE BUREAU

TRENTON -- Gov. Jon S. Corzine was injured in a crash after departing
Atlantic City on the Garden State Parkway Thursday evening.

Corzine spokesman Anthony Coley said the injuries were not life-threatening and could not say where the governor was being treated.

There were also reports that a State Police trooper was injured, but Coley couldn't
confirm that.

Jim Freund, a 2nd lieutenant with the Great Bay Regional EMS squad, who happened on the scene while returning from another call, said he saw Corzine, a trooper and another unidentified victim injured.

Freund said Corzine was removed from his sports utility vehicle -- which was
teetering on a guardrail. "He was conscious, he was moaning," Freund said.

Corzine was in Atlantic City this afternoon at the Trump Taj Mahal to speak at the
annual conference of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors. He then appeared on a radio show hosted by Pinky Kravitz of WOND 1400 AM that also broadcasts from the city.

Is this official now? It sounded like speculation this morning when I was listening. I heard two different statements.
1. He doesn't wear the belt when traveling in passenger seat and likes to sit in front with driver.
2. He always wears the seatbelt unless he needs to move to get something from the back seat.

I didn't hear anyone refer to a police report or anyone involved in the accident for the seatbelt status.

re: was he wearing a seat belt,
I am a auto medical claim specialist
based on his injuries , the multiple broken ribs, sternal fx, multiple femur fx, lumbar fx etc , I would have to say that was not wearing a seat belt.
these are the kind of injuries that occur when you do not wear a seat belt, unfortunately alot of people think that if they are in a vehicle like an suv they will be more protected. not the case .
it will be interesting to see if we ever find out for sure if he was wearing one ....since it is against the law in NJ to driver w/out one and he being the gov and all ..
I am from NJ , he is not my favorite person, but still wish him speedy recovery.

The local AND national news are all reporting that he was NOT wearing a seatbelt and in fact, may be cited. Of course his driver was a NJ State Police Officer. I think the fine is about $40-$45 so it's not a biggie for him and his pocketbook; however, he is paying a much greater price as it is being reported that he may be in a wheelchair 3 - 6 months.
