They won because the choices that folks voted on WERE all mostly SYKBH.

I don't think people criticize the songs because they don't like them. They criticize them because they get played all the time to the exclusion of other, equally good, songs that we hardly ever get to hear.

But people still claim to hate them.

"It's a bathroom break song"

I think they think they're less of a PH if they admit to liking these very good, yet overplayed, songs.

I agree. It's not that they aren't good songs, but how many times do I gotta hear CiP, BEG, and Fins.

Callin it a "bathroom break song" doesn't mean you hate it. It just means you aren't missin anything you haven't seen before.

And, while WDWGDAS, and a couple of other SYKBH may be considered bathroom break songs by some, I am not sure I have ever heard any of the FInal Four referred to that way.

SYKBH are not bad songs.... they are just mainstream.... and most BN'rs have the desire to discover a wider range of Buffett music.... therefore appreciate some of the lessor known works subsequently preferring them to the overplayed SYKBH.

However.... the Final Four songs are certainly not bathroom songs...those are reserved for CHeeseburger and Screw

Glad I stirred up a little healthy discussion, that's what I ws trying to do. My point is, almost all of the SYKBH are great songs, that is why they are the most popular. It doesn't mean you don't like other equally good songs, or that you aren't a true "parrothead". I never understood the "badge of honor" critisims of them, that's all. He Went to Paris always tugs at me no matter how much I hear it. And so do some others.

BEG and WDWGDAS, CIP have gotten to be a little boring at shows, in my opinion. CIP will always be there because it's a great marketing tool for CIP/the Margaritaville restaurants. But, I think it's not that interesting anymore. used to love hearing it because it was 1 of 6 songs I knew for my 1st 2 shows.

CILCIA, APLAF, Son of A Sailor, He Went to Paris, OPH, even Boat Drinks could NEVER get boring, in my opinion, because seeing Jimmy play them IS always special because of the meaning of the songs. I live in snow country (hell, still snowing here in mid April) so Boat Drinks always strikes a chord.

Going to the shows introduced me to Jolly Mon, Great Heart, Diamond as Big as the Ritz, Last Mango, My African Friend, Nothing But a Breeze (amongst others). Although I hadn't heard them before seeing them done live, I loved the songs and bought CDs that had the songs on them. Buying the CD's made me discover so many other great songs that I am pining to hear Jimmy play Cowboy in the Jungle live. Maybe someday.

For many of us, seeing Jimmy live started us on the slippery slope. I wasn't hooked until my 2nd show. Now people think I am insane.

My future mother in law asked at Easter, "You spent all that money to go to Anguilla to see the guy who sings Margaritaville?" to which I replied "Yes. I'd do it again in a heart beat."

So. The Yellow Album songs are kind of like crack for so many of us, I think. You start by getting excited to hear Margaritaville but you keep coming back to hear those gems and to feel the excitement of watching 15,000 to 60,000 waving Fins.

My name is Paul and I am a Buffettaholic

And, I was glad that the final four were songs that I think are pretty special songs even if they are from the sometimes looked down upon Yellow Album.

Now THAT was an entertaining post. I chuckled out loud about your future mother-in-law's comment. And then the Buffettaholic comment, you are on a roll. :)

I agree LIPH, but suppose Buffett did look at a posting such as this tournament, his conclusion would be something like Oh, I guess I'm playing all the songs my real fans want to hear, right? The other songs were up on the brackets. African Friend, Cowboy in the Jungle, Havana Daydreamin(my personal favorite) nd the like all could have been in the final four. But the much maligned SYKBH were.

OPH isn't on the yellow album.

Some of the SYKBH are some of Jimmy's best written songs, IMHO. I've grown a little tired of some - CIP, WDWGDAS - and I've grown tired of some songs not on SYKBH - BEG is the first that comes to mind.

Boat Drinks and Fins have always been favorites of mine, even though they are not wonderfully written songs, but they are catchy and they are fun songs... Some people don't like them much.

Songs like SOASOAS and APLA40, are some of the best examples of how good a songwriter/storyteller Jimmy can be.

I don't criticize SYKBH, because it's a good appetizer into the meal that is Buffett

If it wasn't for CIP and Son Of, I would have never been hooked on Buffett. I first heard them on WNEW radio NY during a 4 song lunch block. I was working at a drive in theater at the time. Plus the woman I was dating (one of my employees :pirate: ) hooked me up with "Off to See The Lizard."
