I'm going to be there for a week at the end of May. Just wondering if anyone has any experience or suggestions of places to eat/grab a beer?

Thanks :D

We've owned a timeshare there for nearly 20 years, at Barrier Island Station in Duck. It is fun just to hang out at the beach and pool and do the planned activities, but here are places we always go while there:

Goombay's -- fun sandwich place on the beach, Kill Devil Hill's. Keet LOVED it when he was little, because the decor is like you're underwater, with the ceiling being the surface of the water. Surfboard and with legs hanging down on the ceiling, shark, etc. We always get a T-shirt, decorated with art by kids.

Wright Brothers memorial -- never fails to be educational.
Jockey's Ridge - a big dune to climb or hang-glide off of.

The Whale's Tail restaurant for good seafood dining.
There's another restaurant across the sound that's just as good.

In Manteo, The Lost Colony play and the Elizabethan Gardens, the N.C. Aquarium -- all are worthwhile.

Lots of cool shops, sandwich shops and pubs in Duck.
Wild horses and lighthouse in Corolla to the north. Good pizza place in Corolla, too.

Hey, we haven't deposited our week the last week of October 2007 yet. Anybody want to rent it from us? Two-bedroom with a full kitchen or two-bedroom with an efficiency kitchen (actually, we have a two weeks).

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! And you'll have a wonderful time there, guaranteed. We're thinking of selling our timeshare, but so many great memories.

In Duck, you have to check out The Blue Point.

Most excellent food. I would eat there every day, if I could afford it.

If you have the time, I would recommend catching the Hatteras Ferry over to Ocracoke and grabbing a beer and sandwich from Howards Pub! I love that place and there is always island music playing! IMO, definitely worth the trip!
Plus, hanging out on Ocracoke Island is pretty cool in itself! Have fun!! 8) :D

Be sure to get up early at least once and drive out on the beach for sunrise. Head north to Corolla few miles to gain access to the beach. Ask the locals, they'll tell you exactly where the beach entrance is. This is not flat Daytona Beach sand, so you'll need 4WD and some clearance to venture far from the main access point. You can however drive on the beach pretty much all the way up to the Virginia border. Grab some coffee and donuts and enjoy the sunrise. When I'm there I do it every day. You can still find some pretty desolate stretches at sunrise where you can be the only one surfing the morning waves.

My old beloved '88 4Runner at sunrise out at OBX. Man, I miss that truck. I finally had to sell it after it was 17 years old and had 265,000 miles.

Yeah, didn't want to do that with my "good" SUV.

But really I did want to drive to VA on the beach from NC. :(

They say the salt water totally hoses up your vehicles - brake systems and such, and since that's my daily vehicle, don't want to hose that up.

If you like Prime Rib check out Coinjock Marina. It's about a 45 min ride back up Rte. 158 along the Intracoastal Waterway.

I think that is also the place where they have something called
"Death by Chocalate". A chocolate brownie covered with choc. ice
cream, choc. syrup, choc. whipped cream, and choc. bits.
A long time ago, don't know if it's still there in Duck, there was a
place called Cap'n Franks. They featured a "Mad Dog". A hot dog with
chile, saurkraut, mustard, cheese, and hot peppers. And if you're
going to Manteo, check the Weeping Radish brewery and restaurant.
They we're microbrewing before it became vogue. I also recommend
Carolina Seafood in Nags Head. Damn, I'm getting hungry. :pirate:

Fishbones, on the soundside in Duck
A most agreeable sunset.

If you go out toward Ocracoke stop at The Orange Blossom Cafe in Buxton, near the ferry. Get an apple ugly either baked or fried and a breakfast biscuit sandwich. On Ocracoke during happy hour 3-5, get a basket of the 15cent shrimps. Very good. Ignore the slightly rustic  atmosphere. Go to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum if you've read A Salty Piece of Land to see a real Fresnel Lense and get books and tapes on the true search for the one from the Hatteras light. Go out to the Hatteras Lighthouse at night. It is impressive to see the beam lit up. Bring binoculars to see the dozens of dolphins that go by every day. Make sure to have a fire on the beach one night.

If you are further south on the OBX, don't eat at a place called Mulligans (way over priced). Duck is very nice, I've been there a few times. I generally go further south.

Jockeys Ridge is free and it is a great place to walk over the moving dunes with your shoes off. Remember what ever you walk to, you will have to walk the same amount back ;)

Wright Brothers is also nice, They put up a new memorial museum for the 100 years of flight,

In Kill Devil Hills there is a Kite place right across from Jockeys Ridge. Its a very nice place, and there is a place to get some ice cream and I believe a fudgery :)

Hope this helps... . We're going down to Corolla I believe, the middle to end of June.

Have a blast!

I second those recommendations for Goombays and The Weeping Radish. (Don't miss their Black Radish Lager.)
