John Denver autobiography gift to JB

Post by Landlocked Sailor Surfer »

A friend sent me a link to an item listed on eBay. Supposedly, it is a personally signed gift from John Denver to Jimmy Buffett; John Denver's autobiography.

There is a long story from the seller as to how he came to be the owner of this book, which is now at http://cgi.ebay.com/JOHN-DENVER-SIGNED- ... dZViewItem

Any comments on the story, the authenticity, etc?

Hey Landlocked...

No idea and less than no interest about the Denver book, but I wanted to say welcome to the board. We are, as you can tell by my name, very close neighbors. I bike through Woody Creek often and take the road up to Hunter's old place if I don't feel like biking all the way to Old Snowmass.

It was great fun to listen to the 2006 Aspen show and hear Jimmy talk about the Snowmass Conoco and Gypsies in the Palace as I rode right past it.

Anyway, welcome...nice to have another RF Valley Buffett fan on board!

Peace...

Thanks for the welcome, "Aspen zip", for lack of another name to call you by.

Were you at the Belly Up for either of the last two shows? I was there in 2005, but missed last year due to knee surgery. Love the Gypsies story and can picture every image that happened. I've been in Jimmy's former Old Snowmass home several times in the past four years. I wouldn't mind housesitting, even now.

It's certainly interesting and seems plausible, but I find it a tad hard to believe Jimmy would have something like that in a 'discard' box. If nothing else, throwing that out would seem to be a sign of disrespect, especially if it occurred after Denver's death.

Not saying it isn't legit, but I just can't picture that.

Maybe I'm just jealous that I don't have connections to the Buffetts like the seller claims to have!

I dont know if its real or not.... but I find this paragraph a bit odd.

However, the names in the inscription sounded familiar. Some of my family members were acquainted with the Buffet family. For instance, my younger brother used to hang out with Savannah Buffett, Jimmy Buffett's daughter, as they attended the same school (the Buffett family residence is in Palm Beach, Florida, only minutes from my own home at the time). Also, my own sister was a housekeeper at the Buffett residence on Palm Beach.

The seller's brother went to the same school as Savannah? Which I might assume not to be a public school.... considering her younger sublings are in private schools.... which cost money. But the sellers sister was a housekeeper? :o

Nothing wrong with domestic service... I just wonder how one kid goes to private school and the other is a housekeeper. Seems kinds off balance.

And there is a Buffett spelling error.....

And none of my ramblings mean a thing.... just tossing it out for conversation.

No, I agree with you there. It sounds a bit far-fetched. Not to mention that if he really lived two minutes away from Jimmy and could afford to send his kid to a private school with Savannah, how could he be in a situation necessitating selling something so rare and allegedly important?

I don't want to sound like I'm defiling the whole thing, but it just doesn't sound right to me for some reason...

whats the reserve

Post by jiggs(2) »

what could the reserve price be on this item...I assume its several hundred + several hundred as described in the auction, but seems that someone who's kids attend the same school as Jimmy and lives a few doors down from him in Palm Beach would have money enough no to need to flip books he picked up at the library...

I'm just suspicious of autograph sellers in general, though. It's SO incredibly easy to forge an autograph convincingly enough to get it verified.

But who knows? This may be a rare real-deal!

exactly! I know we have discussed JB's autograph.... and quite honestly... I wouldnt want it unless he signed something for me.... then it means something.

And... looking at the items that JB signed for myself and my lucky BN phrends... the sigs are so different... I would not buy them off ebay!! LOL

I found a few things not quite right enough to make me question it: the book was first released in 1994.
#1 - why a second edition and not a first edition?
#2 - why was Savannah the only child mentioned in the inscription? Granted, Cameron was adopted in 1994, and may not have been in the family yet, but where is Sarah's name?
#3 - my past experience in law enforcement tells me this: the farther one goes to over-explain a situation, the more likely that situation is to be false.
#4 - I agree that tossing out this book would seem pretty callous and insensitive on the part of Jimmy, and I can't picture it happening. If it was tossed out by mistake by a housekeeper, then I find it harder to believe that anyone at the library would let it go, not to mention any number of people who checked the book out to read it.

I believe an unsuspecting JD fan will be buying this book, and not a Jimmy Buffett fan.

Yeah, the only mentioning Savannah would be weird and the fact that someone (or several someones) at the library would have examined the book well enough to see that large inscription before it ever even went to the racks for selling. If you saw that, how could you not keep it for yourself, even if you're not a fan of either?

Or the library would auction it as a fund-raiser. Or Jimmy would sell it and give the proceeds to charity. Does sound fishy...

I don't know, but I bought a signed autobiography of Chuck Norris's for $1 at Half Price Books.....I wasn't sure it was his writing, but it looks like the one of the pic I got for my Daddy. :D
I was suprised it was on the sale rack outside, but it was :-?

Sounds like the seller is "straining to do some explaining."

I'd guess it's a forgery. Just too many goofy details. The fact that it's an otherwise worthless 2nd edition underscores the fact that it's likely a fake.

I agree with what was mentioned above, I find it hard to believe JB would get rid of this. I know for a fact he likes John Denvers music anyway, personally heard him say it in a conversation back in the 70's, so again, hard to understand him getting rid of this, smellin' fishy [smilie=huh-ani.gif]

I've always liked John Denver (went to a concert of his in 1982), and one thing I never knew was that he recorded "Stars On the Water."
(Yeah, yeah, I KNOW it was written by Rodney Crowell, but STILL.........................).

Anyway, I really miss that guy.

I've been a big fan of his music for a long time, I made a great mix CD I listen to while I'm sailing, listen to it often.

I often wonder what his music would have evolved into if he were still with us :(
Kinda like JB's music, its been interesting to listen from "Down To Earth" all along to "Take The Weather..."

Cool about him covering Stars On The Water", I'll have to search my albums.

And I'll have to head to Best Buy to see if they have it.
Wouldn't it be great if it were on an album with Calypso? :D
