Rockin' AM radio

What AM music stations did the "more experienced" BNers listen to when growing up? You know, the AM top 40 stations that dominated -- the ones with cheesy DJs, catchy jingles and the commercials were all for acne products or jean stores (fall in-to The Gap):D

Growing up on the West Coast (of Michigan), we listened to Mighty 92 WOKY from Milwaukee. Early in the evening, when they changed transmitters and the signal faded, we switched over to The Big 89, WLS in Chicago. Boogie Checks, Larry Lujack, John Records Landecker....

A little bit of Super CFL, am 1000 in Chicago, too. And it wasn't a rock station, but WGN radio made me a Bud Man, Cub Fan!

I still listen to Hannity on AM radio if I have a reasonably long drive and nothing else piques my interest.

I can recall Y100 in Ft Lauderdale.... and I lived there 66-76 (I was 6-16) But it was FM. It was the top 40 station. I dont recall listening to AM.

In the summers I lived in NY.... and you know I cannot recall any stations... I know I listened.... :-? but the only AM station I remember is the one the Yankee games were on... Grandmother used to listen religiously to the away games.... LOL

The first thing I did when I got my car was to install an FM converter (yes I am old  ) so I didn't have to listen to "Cousin Brucie" on W-A-B-Ceeeeeee

KJR Seattle channel 95.

They used to do a weekly contest called the "Stewart Street Mysteries"

Stewart street is the name of one of the citys more famous streets and they used it as the name of their detective. They would play a bit of the mystery each morning and every day that someone didn't figure out what Stewart knew and how he knew it they would add more to it.

The answer would be something along the lines of "Stewart knew that Pike Place market wasn't open during those hours so the guy couldn't have been doing what he said he was doing. (you get the idea?) I loved listening to that stuff, and learned a ton of Seattle trivia from it. Even thought of developing a board game based on it.

Thanks for the wayback trip. :D

All over NO CAL you could listen to KFRC with Dr. Donald D. Rose in the AM. Never had an FM radio until 1978 :o That's probably why I love all those crappy AM classics from the 70's so much :D

The FM music was on KZAP 98.5 and KSFM Earth Radio 102 Woodland [smilie=cool_goatee.gif]

those were great.. bolt them to the underside of the dashboard... run the power up over the steering column underneath the dash to keep it out of the way...

I miss the radio pushbuttons that manually slid the indicator across the dial. Then you had to "fine-tune" it yourself, because the push-button only got you so close. Even then, sometimes you would catch yourself listening to the wrong station, if they were close on the dial.

In Chicago, WLS with Dex Card (yes that was his name) and whoever was on WCFL (Ron Britan I think) in the 60's would play the top 40 in order from two to six EVERY afternoon and it WAS important who was the song played at six for the new #1. I remember being with my sister or next door neighbor switching back and forth seeing which station had what song in what position. All this while watching the Sci-Fi Movies that were on Channel 7 "The Big Show" (Dick Clark's "Where the Action is" came later) and Channel 2 "The Early Show" every day at 3:30 (unless the Cubs were on) or if we had a friend on "Kiddie A Go-Go" on channel 26.

This Song will always be WLS in the 60's to me

MRS. BROWN YOU'VE GOT A LOVELY DAUGHTER
(Trevor Peacock)
Herman's Hermits - 1965

Mrs. Brown you've got a lovely daughter
Girls as sharp as her are somethin' rare
But it's sad, she doesn't love me now
She's made it clear enough it ain't no good to pine

She wants to return those things I bought her
Tell her she can keep them just the same
Things have changed, she doesn't love me now
She's made it clear enough it ain't no good to pine

Walkin' about, even in a crowd, well
You'll pick her out, makes a bloke feel so proud

If she finds that I've been round to see you (round to see you)
Tell her that I'm well and feelin' fine (feelin' fine)
Don't let on, don't say she's broke my heart
I'd go down on my knees but it's no good to pine

Walkin' about, even in a crowd, well
You'll pick her out, makes a bloke feel so proud

If she finds that I've been round to see you (round to see you)
Tell her that I'm well and feelin' fine (feelin' fine)
Don't let on, don't say she's broke my heart
I'd go down on my knees but it's no good to pine

Mrs. Brown you've got a lovely daughter (lovely daughter)
Mrs. Brown you've got a lovely daughter (lovely daughter)
Mrs. Brown you've got a lovely daughter (lovely daughter)
Mrs. Brown you've got a lovely daughter (lovely daughter)

I remember sitting with friends listening to a transistor radio jamming to 13Q
Found this...
One of the first five Pittsburgh radio stations, WJAS was licensed as of August 4, 1922. In the course of 80 + years, you may have heard announcers like Hillary Bogden on the air. Sam Nicotero and Jack Wheeler held the position of morning host in the past. Presently, Jack Bogut (formerly of sister WSHH, WTAE Radio/TV & KDKA Radio/TV) takes the morning drive and Chilly Billy Cardille (former Channel 11 weather man and program host) hosts the Mid-day. Former WTAE Radio personality Mike McGann came to the station in early 2003 as PD and PM drive host. WJAS went through a "rebellious" period in the 1970's where it became the infamous 13Q. Always housed with its FM sister on 99.7 WKTQ was purchased from Nationwide Broadcasting by Benni Broadcasting at the same time WSHH was purchased by Renda. WKTQ returned as WJAS with adult standards and remained in the same building as WSHH. Renda bought WJAS a year later in the early 80's. Jeff Roteman has a page dedicated to the old 13Q - WKTQ. This page can be reached at http://13q.andmuchmore.com/ . WJAS is still sister to WSHH-FM and WPTT-AM and owned by Renda Broadcasting.

In the summer, in the mid-1960s, on the eastern shores of Lake Huron (that would also be Ontario's West Coast  ), the only station in our world was CKLW, Windsor, Ont., which we thought was our own peek into Motown...
I had a transistor radio, about 4 x 9 x 1 inches, and I invented earbuds, by wiring 2 earphones together (should have taken out a patent for that one  ). I took my radio everywhere, especially to the beach.
I wonder how many people singing along to BEG even know what a transistor radio was....
