Thank you to Radio JimmyDreamz http://www.radio.jimmydreamz.com for sharing the following excerpt transcript from “Songs from the Soul” featuring special guest Nadirah Shakoor on Time After Island Time, Part 2 of 2, which debuted 5/14/07. Produced by Paul Leslie & Jeff Pike.

Paul: A lot of our listeners, well actually, this is breaking news. No one else has, this is new.

Ms. Nadirah Shakoor: Drum roll.

Paul: Yeah, this is big news and you're hearing it first here. Nadirah, there is a new project coming up and I wanted you to tell us all about it. I already know.

Ms. Nadirah Shakoor: (Laughs) Okay. Jimmy approached me and asked me if I would like to do an album covering his songs. And, what do you think I said? I'm really excited about it. We're going to start recording I think in June. I don't know what songs exactly I'm going to be doing. It's a wonderful opportunity. It's like a beautiful gift, and I want to do a really good job and give him a beautiful gift back. Mac McAnally's going to be helping with the project. Michael Utley and some of the guys.

Paul: That's very exciting.

Ms. Nadirah Shakoor: It is!

Paul: Is there any song in particular that you're hoping will be on it?

Ms. Nadirah Shakoor: Well, I don't know what songs are going to be on it. I know Jimmy has some songs in mind. He hasn't shared those with me yet. I got a list yesterday from Savannah, because I asked her for her input. Mac is working on a list. We'll probably do "Son of a Son..." I'd like to do that as a duet with Jimmy. And also in the show we do a rendition of "Pirate," that goes into Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." Jimmy's original idea for that was to do a verse of Pirate a verse of "Redemption Song," you know, like a half a verse of each. I thought it was a brilliant idea. The way the lyrics coincide. The two different stories, and I would love to put that on there.

Paul: That would be very cool.

Ms. Nadirah Shakoor: I think so too! So I don't know what songs are going to go, but I know it's a very special project to me. A big challenge and an honor. I'm going to sing my (silence) off.

I think the idea of alternate verses of A Pirate Looks At Forty and Redemption Song would be great.

I like what we've already heard combined of these songs this year in concert. In fact, I may just have to listen to it now :P

Redemption Song is one of my favorite Bob Marley songs, I wish they'd do more than just the one verse when they do it live.

And ditto!

And if you like Redemption Song, you might want to check out HAPA's version of it on iTunes. It's very much like Nadirah's version; very melodic and flowing.

I just went to iTunes, there are 81 versions of Redemption Song. I already had Arrested Development's version, they also have a solo version by Speech, the leader of Arrested Development. And there's a duet by Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer, who if I'm not mistaken was in The Clash.

Multiple versions by some people. For instance, there are 8 Bob Marley versions, 4 by Toots & The Maytals, 3 by Speech, 2 by Stevie Wonder, 2 by some group called Amazonics.

I've been very excited about the news of this project from the very first moment I heard about it. I think it was incredibly cool of Jimmy to offer Nadirah this opportunity, and I am so happy for her that he did. I think she'll knock our flip flops off with her renditions of Jimmy's songs, especially with the help of Mac, Mr Utley, and "some of the guys".

She's a talented, amazing, cool and classy woman!

Ms. Nadirah Shakoor: "It's like a beautiful gift, and I want to do a really good job and give him a beautiful gift back."

I really look forward to the finished product! :D

First of all, thank you for posting this. If you haven't heard Nadirah Shakoor's original music, I would like to invite you to do so. Check out http://www.myspace.com/nadirahshakoor Her songwriting is excellent and her voice as you all know, divine.

We'll be doing some great shows coming up, and I think everyone will enjoy them--as we continue to offer you a piping hot, well-seasoned serving of music and discussion. Thanks for listening and remember that TAIT can happen to you.

More later...

Nadirah's appearing at a club here in NYC tonight but showtime isn't until 11:00 and I have to work tomorrow. If I went I'd probably get home in time to take a shower, go back to the train station and come back to work.

If I didn't already have plans for after work tomorrow night I might. But I can't go without sleep for 2 days anymore.
