Cuban Cigars
I just read an article that it is illegal for US citizens to purchase Cuban Cigars anywhere in the world. What a crock of s**t if you ask me, and I rarely ever smole cigars, but I don't feel the US government should have regulations saying I can't buy/smoke a Cuban cigar in X country. I know this is one rule that is constantly violated.

I travel to Montreal often. They have real Cuban Cigars up there (unlike what they claim in places like Key West and New Orleans . . . don't fall for it tourists!). I have am quite certain that because of our embargo that it IS illegal for a citizen of the United Stats to support Cuba in any way. But I don't think buying a cigar before a Canadiens game is a big deal.
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

It's not just buying them, and bringing them back to the US. You can't even buy them in a country where it is legal and smoke them in that country.Dezdmona wrote:My guess is that if caught they would confiscate them (especially if you only had a few)...but who knows.
We drink Cuban Rum when we're in Mexico, (when not drinking Tequila).
(DH doesn't smoke cigars)

You are under the laws of the country you are in. The U.S. Government does not have juristiction on what you do in other countries.
Don't have a tizzy and enjoy a great Cigar. Actually you can buy them in the U.S. as long as it doesn't have an indentifying marker on them like the band. A neighbor of mine is a member of a cigar club and they mail the cigars, then a few days later they mail the bands. Both of them together make it illegal. This neighbor is also a local Police officer.

There is a huge difference between being legal and "getting by with it."
Please make sure that you elected representatives in Congress and the Senate are aware of your thoughts on dealing with Cuba.
The nice folks at the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control can answer most of yourquestions about Cuba. The question is often asked whether United States citizens
or permanent resident aliens of the United States may
legally purchase Cuban origin goods, including tobacco and
alcohol products, in a third country for personal use
outside the United States. The answer is no.

I LOVE The Governator!
He has a special cigar smoking tent for all his cigar buddies to go to and smoke while the discuss state business. Arnie says it takes at least an hour to enjoy a good cigar and you can learn a lot and talk a lot in that sort of time frame, especially if you compare that to a drink or a cup of coffee.

If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

I smoked a few in Mexico recently and also Jamaica.
I heard you can buy them on the cruise boat too.
Can't imagine it would be hard to bringing them back since you basically can't tell if they are cuban by looking at them. Still I did not try.
The only different thing about them is that they're illegal.
Cigars from the Dominican Republic as well as other places down there are basically the same.
ah man now I need a smoke

The paragraph below is from a June 1999 article in Cigar Aficonado Magazine. I have heard the story elsewhere, and it has always made me laugh.
President John F. Kennedy is said to have instructed his press secretary, Pierre Salinger, to go out and buy as many Cuban cigars as he could get his hands on. Salinger returned to the Oval Office the next day with more than a thousand Cuban cigars. President Kennedy, the story goes, inspected the loot, then took out his pen and signed the Executive Order imposing the Cuban embargo.

There was this cigar shop in DC that sold pre-Castro Cuban cigars.Quint wrote:I think it is always funny down here when people get excited when they see the signs on the street booths that say " Cuban rolled cigars "......its all in the wording people.

The US policy against Cuba is stupid, especially when you consider how we embrace other communist countries (China). I have 2 pounds of Cuban coffee in the house now from my last trip to the carribean. I don't smoke, but if I did it would be cuban just so I could thumb my nose at the stupid US policy. I do plan to visit Cuba as a tourist soon. It may still be this summer if I am lucky.

Just watching Today Show. This ought to be interesting.
In an NBC News exclusive — and one of the few times an American television show has broadcast live from the country — Matt Lauer will report on the current political and cultural climates in Cuba on TODAY Tues., June 5.

I used to get my cigars from a small shop in Union City, NJ hand rolled by an old Cuban man who once told me that the Dominican Republic tobacco is the same as Cuban breed ever since the blight in Cuba a while ago. He said that some seeds were smuggled out of Cuba and planted on the Dominican Republic. Then the blight in Cuba happened an killed all the original plants so they smuggled some seeds back to Cuba from the Dominican Republic. So basically they are both the same exact breed except that the Dominican cigars are less costly.sonofabeach wrote:Cigars from the Dominican Republic as well as other places down there are basically the same.

Also it's to totally stupid for the US government to tell me what I can and can't do when I am not on their soil. How arrogant! I was also told to just take the wrappers off before going through customs.CrznDnUS1 wrote:I used to get my cigars from a small shop in Union City, NJ hand rolled by an old Cuban man who once told me that the Dominican Republic tobacco is the same as Cuban breed ever since the blight in Cuba a while ago.
