The Puffin Cafe - Puffin stuff hits the spot
Waterside cafe scores big hit with Jamaican- and Caribbean-inspired menu

WHERE: The Puffin Cafe, 14 S A St., Washougal, 360-335-1522.
WHY: Summer for my family isn't complete without enjoying a few meals along the Columbia River. The list of restaurant options for waterside dining in Clark County is regrettably short, but I'm delighted it includes The Puffin Cafe.
Floating on a marina dock and accessible by boat, the small cafe's bright turquoise exterior lures diners with the promise of island-style relaxation.
The Caribbean- and Jamaican-inspired menu offers variety crab cake sandwiches, fish and chips, salsa chicken, burgers and tacos. The Barbados fish taco is the top seller, with the jerk burger coming in close behind, says Jennifer Guetter, who owns the four-year-old restaurant with her husband, Robert.
I'm a fan of jerk chicken, so I tried the Montego Bay chicken taco. It struck the balance between sweet and spicy that I look for in island dishes. The chicken was tender, and pineapple-coconut salsa added sunny flavor.
The Puffin Cafe's twist on coleslaw, the tropical slaw, is tossed with a delicate sesame-orange-ginger dressing that's unfortunately overpowered by the sweetness of dried pineapple mixed in with the cabbage.
My lunching companion judges waterside dining by the quality of the burgers. The spicy jerk burger intimidated him, so he ordered the Buccaneer burger, dressed with barbecue sauce. He deemed it a success. The cojita cheese and red onions were nice additions to the basic burger, but the sauce was a little sweet. Waffle fries, ordered as a side, were crisp on the outside, tender inside, and pleasingly but not overwhelmingly seasoned.
The extensive tropical drink menu intrigued us, but given our lunchtime visit, we'll have to look forward to exploring that another time.
COST: Entrees range from $4.50 for the Grog Dog, a third-pound beer sausage, to $13.75 for Diablo shrimp, spicy shrimp sauteed in white wine and garlic and served over angel hair pasta. Sides, sold separately, go for a dollar or two. Salads are $7.25 and soups are $5.50 to $6.
HOURS: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily during the summer; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. the rest of the year.
This show is very kindly sponsored by the Jennifer and Robert Guetter, the owners of the Puffin Cafe, so be sure to let them know you appreciate their support of independent tropical music right on the Columbia River!
