As a member of BN's younger genereation, I have to apologize for this generation's new music. I'm not talking about older rockers putting out new music like Jimmy, Rush, etc. I'm talking about the Justin Timberlakes, the Rihannas. You look at the names getting put into the Rock N' Roll HOF, and I can't name one band/artist on the same level as those guys. Green Day? No way. Fall Out Boy? Puh-leassse I think it's sad that Britney Spears even gets a mention. The only group I can think of off the top of my head that has real talent compared to classic rock are the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and they've even been around for a while.

Even beyond rock, our generation doesn't stand up to the last one. Rap? I'll Run DMC over 50 Cent when every other song 50 "sings" about is either girls, bling, avoiding the po-pos (police), cars, guns, violence, etc.

So on behalf of my generation, I apologize to the music world for this generation of musicians.

Hey jonesy
don't take it so personally, you're really not alone

I grew up in a '70's era that also produced music by Starland Vocal Band, and Blue Swede [smilie=puking.gif] [smilie=puking.gif]

The '80's stuck us with sooooooo much **** from the likes of Kajagoogoo and Winger [smilie=shake.gif] [smilie=shake.gif] .
All that cocaine really didn't make any of it sound any better

Over the years, as a rock'n'roll fan, there's still plenty of garbage to go around

These days, I think Jack Johnson, Snow Patrol, Alicia Keys and Joss Stone represent pretty well
and at least, Rihanna is smokin' hot  :P

Well at least however bad it was in the 70's, Afternoon Delight rules by the way :o  :pirate: , it's not near as bad as today.

Brittney won't "perform" on the Cyndi Lauper tour because they wouldn't let her dance or lip sync. :-?
1970
The 3-day Atlanta Pop Festival opens at Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron, Georgia. The crowd of 200,000 hears and sees Jimi Hendrix play his version of "The Star Spangled Banner." Two days later, Georgia Governor Lester Maddox says he will seek legislation banning rock festivals in the state.
This is where we've gone, from wanting to ban rock shows to allowing people to committ blatant fraud. At least Milli Vanilli wasn't allowed to get away with it.

At least there is someone out there trying to expose it.

I too spent some time in the '70's and took much refuge in the '60's....went back to the beginning in so many ways.....Beatles, Stones, The Who, The Doors, Cream...though there were bands that crossed into the '70's Led Zepplin.....I found a lot of the 70's dreadful....the '80's were such a breath of fresh air...... the resurgance of reggae and ska (Marley, et all, Madness, the selector, the specials), The Police, The clash.....and yet there was it's share as well.........Point being that every generation has it's good and bad and that only time will tell which is which.......

At this point I have gone back yet again......back to the roots.....'30's jazz and swing....the roots of the fusion of jazz and blues....the foundation of rock....man there is some cool stuff.......and you can feel the thread of time that links it all together......

Dont be so hard on yourself, every decade has had a ton of crappy music. The difference now is that the media is pushing the crap at us. Fall out boy? they are awful, but pushed as the next big thing. The main problem is that Zep, Stones, Beatles, Sex Pistols, Police, Eagles, etc. all did something new, or at least new to a broader audience that hadnt heard anything like it. It has all been done before. Hell new Aerosmith and Stones music is mediocre at best. There are plenty of good bands out there, and the older guys that still can rock are out there too.
Now with itunes and the sort it makes it easier to find the good music, just gotta dig though lots of garbage to find it.

There is a ton of great new music out there . . . it just perhaps isn't being played on popular main stream radio stations and MTV . . .

I mean a ton of great new bands every year; ever listen to Radio Margaritaville . . . if by "young" you mean under 30 than Rm would be a great place to start . . .

Oh . . . and do you know who buys music? Whether it be online or at a local "Record Store" over 50% of ALL music bought is by teenage girls . . . nothing wrong with that but in terms of music being sold that is where you get the main stream commercial packaging of the Justin Timberlakes, Rhianna's, Britney Spears etc.

Teenage boys, Adult (19+) Men, and Adult Women do not buy as much music combined as teenage (under 19) girls. Rolling Stone had an article on this . . . it stemmed from who were the people calling into American Idol - mostly all teenage girls (over 75%).

Mainstream music doesnot represent the quality of music sold. It represents the cool thing for a certain group/ age of people.

Pop music, by nature, blows....but it's almost necessary.
Most people start out listening to pop as a kid or teen...eventually, one of the performers will somehow lead them to what they really like.....god knows, I listened to Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Kung Fu Fighting, Little Willy, Hooked on a Feeling, Tony Orlando and Dawn......and too many other musical atrocities.......but it all takes you to where you need to be!
My daughter listens to Fall Out Boy.....and as the coolest Mom on the block, I took her to their concert last week......it didn't s*** as bad as I thought it would....high energy and just kids having fun and enjoying 'their' music and each other.....so while I think they're a flash in the pan and really won't be around five years from now......I do think my daughter will look back at them the same way I do "David Gates and Bread".....as part of growing up!
Someday, when she's on her way to her office to consult with one of her plastic surgery patients (a girl can dream, right) she'll hear "Sugar, We're Going Down" and sing as loudly as I do when I hear "I Think I Love You"!!!

Think of it this way, would record executives today spend the $$$$ to promote the likes of the Stones, U2, Boston, Aerosmith, The Who, Pink Floyd, etc??? How about Jannis Joplin? Like every other aspect of our consumer driven society, some a hole in some office building makes decisions what we REALLY want, and like lemmings, we march down to Wal-Mart and buy it.

Alicia Keys' mom used to be a paralegal at the firm. No, I never asked her to introduce me to her daughter.

BTW, how does a f'n geek like Justin Tinkerbelle have a career in music? The guy is pretty much talent-free.

SO sad.

young teenage girls often like safe/asexual guys. They also like what all their friends like.
That's pretty interesting that they actually make the bulk of music purchases. It's amazing that we get any variety then. I wonder if the older folks and guys direct programming choices due to concert ticket sales?

It will be very interesting to see which bands of the Fall Out Boy generation end up leaving a lasting impression and end up being the great bands of this time.

Going back into the 90's bands, I would be willing to bet that Green Day ends up being one of the greats of this time. Whether you like them or not (I'm mixed), I think time will show them to be a keeper among modern rock bands. I agree with RHCP and I definately think Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson are quality performers that are here to stay.

Dave Matthews has one of the worst voices I've heard in a long time, he sounds like he's having lower intestinal problems. Jack Johnson's CDs should all come with some uppers, he's so boring it's hard to stay awake listening to his music.
