Her name was Joanne
And she lived in a meadow by a pond
And she touched me for a moment
With a look that spoke to me of her sweet love

OoH, remember this one?

I kinda liked the _Elephant Parts_ version:

Her name was Rodan
And she lived in the sea off Japan

How is that? They wrote their own songs, played their own instruments and influenced untold numbers of musicians (for better or worse) with their back to basics form of rock n' roll. If they and the Sex Pistols weren't in there then something would be horribly wrong. People may not like punk rock (myself included) but to deny it's influence would be a travesty.

I've heard the story about Stephen Stills being turned down (not because of a lack of talent but because he appeared too old for the role) at an audition but not Manson, maybe because (at least according to Snopes) it isn't true:

While the Monkees definitely don't belong in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, a good case could be made for Michael Nesmith though. He's one of the unsung heroes of the pioneering days of "country rock".

Ok so I should have put a wink smiley in there to show I was joking. I really didn't think anyone would believe I was serious.
