Here's what I think should happen...Chad Pennington should sue Belichek and the Patriots. Pennington got injured in that game. What if he got hit because the Patriots knew the Jets blocking schemes?
He can pay him off with a super bowl ring.

The Patriots got off easy with this. I think they should have been punished harder than what they did.

I think Belichek should have been suspended for at least one game.

This is not going to help with the midfield meeting after the game.

I don't get why they fined them all this money and took away draft picks, but did not make them forfeit the game. That to me seems like the appropiate punishment. You got caught cheating in the game, you get punished in that game. And you know that if it comes down to a one game difference between the Pats and the Jets at the end of the year, that is what everyone will be asking. (And by everyone I mean Jets fams and the New York media.)

The article I read said they got the camera early in the first quarter and didn't affect the outcome of the game...ohh well...

Yeah, I heard that too, but it just seems like the fines would be more appropriate with something outside of an actual game, like taping practice sessions, or tampering with draft picks or discussing trades, something like that.

And for anyone who thinks they got off light, consider McLaren in F1. They were caught with a 700 page handbook of all the technical specs of the competitor Ferrari--and got fined $100 million!! :o :o

The NCAA re-writes results all the time. Games get forfeited. The 1993 Michigan Wolverines, who lost to Duke in the final, now officially did not win a game that year.
Didn't something like that happen to another team (Villanova?) back in the 1980s?
Not remembering that one, but the 2005 Oklahoma Sooners have forfeited their entire schedule.

The interesting one is the Reggie Bush-led USC teams. They haven't ruled yet, but USC may forfeit their championship.
Not sure about
Nova, but Alabama's football team was forced to forfeit games from several years back in the investigation that had them put on probation.

I really don't see much happening to USC. They already admitted that Bush contacted one of their 2007 signees during the recruiting period (a big no-no) and the NCAA didn't do anything about that. If anything happens with the Bush deal, he may have to forfiet the Heisman, but they won't take games/titles from the team.

500,000 is the maximum fine.

My point exactly. $500,000 was way too little.

I assume you understand what "maximum" means?

Perhaps the NFL can change the fine total for the next team to get caught but in the Patriots case, Bellichick could not have been fined more. The fact that the maximum fine was issued is very telling.

On a side note, nobody around here mentioned two things about this:

1. The camera was confiscated in the first quarter so it didn't really factor into anything. The Patriots win against the Jets was legit.

2. From what many active coaches and retired coaches have said, it appears that behind closed doors Mangini is the one getting sh it from everyone. Not defending Bellichick. But it certainly does appear that Mangini broke a gentleman's code that filming coaches during games, albeit illegal, is common and an accepted coaching strategy. There are atleast 25 active coaches on Bellichick's side according to ESPN.
