Wow. This one is financially do-able. A week here is cheaper than 4 nights on Anguilla.

$2,000 hotel/air for a week from Detroit.

$3,000 for somewhere really, really nice like the JW Marriott.

Too bad I have trial that will not settle scheduled to start 10/3!

Maybe I should be happy that I can't even be tempted by this one.

Hey maybe they'll either settle or ask for a delay. Either should work. Haven't heard how much tickets will be.. Has anybody heard anything? Or does anyone remember how much they were in '05? I guess I'll be spending Saturday morning in front of the computer. OH MY GOSH, I'm on call. Hope I don't get called in :-?

The ParrotHead club tickets are $126.
In 2005 lawn tickets were only $25. Now that's cheap....

Don't worry.... pretty much everything else costs WAY more than in Camden..... :o

Milk runs what, kama'aina, about $6 a gallon? Gas? Went up over $3 a gallon a couple of years ago....

But you CAN eat on the cheap.... Plate lunch, available at LOTS of places; lotta food, cheap. ABC stores: they have everything.

And for T-shirts and souvenirs? One of the best places is, believe it or not, Walmart.....

If you want to sit on the beach in a chair, don't rent one. Buy one at WalMart for under $15, use it for the whole time you're there, then either give it away or check it as luggage for the return trip (get the beach/camp chair in the bag). If it makes it back in one piece (and mine did, twice), great. If not, you still spent less than if you rented a chair.

Like most tourist areas, you spend less if you get away from tourist central and eat where the locals eat. However, one of the places that I feel is absolutely worth the money is Dukes. Not cheap, but I've always had delicious fish meals there. Upstairs from Dukes, The Hula Grill, is also *excellent*, if a little pricey, but I don't mind pricey if you get what you pay for. Last time I went to Hula Grill, about 3 years ago, I think I spent about $60, including two glasses of wine and coffee. Hula Grill doesn't have the beach bar atmosphere of Dukes, but is still a great meal overlooking the water.

Another great fish place is Buzz's, in Kailua, on the windward side, particularly if you lean toward Asian preparation (ginger sauces, etc).

Want a *nice* night out? Roys. Exquisite. Delicious. Not cheap. :D (Only ate there once, on a business trip where I didn't pick the restaurant. Steep prices for my taste, but definitely a great fine dining experience.)

There's also an Outback Steakhouse in Honolulu, if you seem to have lost your mind..... Unless you don't have an Outback at home and you really want to eat at one..... :o

There are Starbucks on almost every corner. I was behind Josh Holloway (Sawyer on LOST) at a Starbucks 2 years ago, before the show became a huge hit. Poor guy probably can't go to his local Starbucks any more without getting mugged by fans... :-? I dunno, maybe they're cool and leave him be....

And a non-Buffett-related Cheeseburger in Paradise in Waikiki.

That Kava Smoothie does sound good. And the Bad Ass Coffee Company franchise is locally owned. :D

(Although Hawaii is the first place I had Starbucks, so for me the two are linked, and my first sip of Starbucks coffee instantly takes me to sunrise on the windward side, with my coffee and scone.... 8) )

OOO, OOOOOO..... for lunch (or just for the beer).... Kona Brewing Company in Hawaii Kai, at Koko Head Marina..... Most excellent sandwiches and awesome microbrew beer. Sit inside or sit outside on the deck, right beside the docks, looking across the water to mountains..... ahhhhhhhhhhhh........

While it can get expensive, Hawaii is cheaper than you might think. I ride a moped to offset the gas cost but California has higher prices usually. Everything else seems about normal (except milk).

If you eat off Waikiki, there is a ton of great spots for reasonable prices. The Mai Tai Bar does fresh sashimi and poke each day and they half great pupu happy hours. My friend just took over as the chef of Hula Grill and told me to give it a few months until he can revamp the stale menu. Assagio does amazing Italian (and I'm picky). Etc. Etc. You won't starve out here. Good, cheap sushi is abundant, too.

A lot of restaurants are going out of business (Jackie Chan's and TGI Fridays most recently) so the better places are rising to the top and picking off the best employees.

I love Starbucks and gladly laid my soul on the steps of their corporate towers but there is a place called Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf which is probably better. More importantly, they offer free wireless with purchase. Very good for those on vacation.

Two years ago I went to Duke's on Sunday. Henry Kapono was out on the patio stage on the beach with his band. I saw Charleston walk in. A few minutes later, Buffett came in. Maybe 15 or 20 minutes after that he walked out and sang Margaritaville with Henry.
