Reviews of the Chicago Show
The Daily Southtown has a review of Saturday's show at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre: "Buffett & Co. deliver again"
Chicago Trubune: "Venue missteps fail to mar Buffett's overflow party"
Chicago Sun Times: "Jimmy Buffett Charms"

In early June Buffett made his performance debut in Paris, France (not Tennessee) at the 400-seat New Morning Club. He's seriously thinking about a show amongst the tiki gods on Easter Island in the South Pacific. "I'm trying to cut down to about 20 dates a year," he said. "I'm doing the things I wanted to do the year I turned 60 in terms of lifestyle and music. As I throttle back I'm thinking more about teaching and getting involved with baseball, a fun hobby that might come back on my radar."

From the Sun Times blog:
Er - I've never been to a midwest show but this sounds like the shows in the Northeast... also, isn't the Mardi Gras-esque party atmosphere what Buffett shows are all about? I think the author of this article misses the point. He "appreciates" Buffett music but he has no clue how to "enjoy" Buffett music. They lose sight of Buffett's musical acumen because of the surreal ritual of his live show: fins hats that block your view, men in coconut bras and grass skirts and heavy drinking. This is mostly a Midwest deal and I don't care for it either.

I don't like the sound of this
I don't like the sound of this:
I understand he wants to cut back....but is he cutting off the hands that have fed him all these years?
Will there be a ripple effect in terms of slowing sales at his stores and restaurants and merchandise and on and on?
I believe the touring has helped keep the interest high among his customers. Once that stops in venues people can easily get to, is there a negative effect? I think there is.
I can work in an overnight trip to Charlotte or Columbia or Atlanta or Virginia-but to take a week to go to Hawaii? Or Aruba? Thats IF you get a ticket, then a plane flight, an overpriced hotel for "X" number of days....because the price was jacked up because he was in town....Well, I'm concerned I won't be able to do that much.
The average professional person he jokes about coming to his show to "get away" for one night-they may drop him off their entertainment radar.
There would be a "contraction" of the M-ville stores and assorted swag he sells if this goes that way. Now I know most people here on this board are hard core, and would take the time to deal with the logistics of getting to who knows where for a show....but....but.....
On the other hand, he has not gotten to where he is without having some darn good business savvy and knows this will happen. And I'm certain he has enough money to last him and his family a long long time.
I just regret it on a personal level...I may have seen my last concert last year in Charlotte-and didn't even know it. I hope not.
Here is an idea: the Margaritville Travel Agency-sell an all in one package with a ticket to the show, flight and room at the place he is playing.
Count me in!
Well, I think the people that have supported Mr. Jimmy all these years may not be able to take the time or have all the money it takes to go see him in some relatively exotic concert venue."It started in Hawaii about five years ago when we did a show in a Honolulu park. A lot of people wrapped their vacation around the show and they didn't have to go 30 miles out of town like most of the places we're playing these days. You don't have that drive."

This was my 8th show at Tinley and it just seemed that they sold a whole lot more tickets this year...it's always crowded, it always takes a while to go to the bathroom and get a beer, but Saturday seemed more insane than usual.
After awhile I decided it was better to buy $10 beers for $20 from passersby than waste half an hour trying to fight my way through crowds that had no problem knocking people over just to get ahead.
Just some venting after the show.....everything else rocked- hopefully Alpine will handle it better!

Couldn't be me in the gorilla disguise.

and I agree!
Since JB almost always performs in a foreign country quite a distance from me, there is always travel involved. Even Toronto will be an overnight trip for me....
Come on, Jimmy, make it an all-inclusive vacation.

I think so too.....My father, who is 83...just started reading all about Jimmy..and calls him a true "Renaissance" Man....Well rounded in all things....and he is not easily impressed....Bwana Paul wrote:It seems he is very serious about the teaching thing.

Found this interesting also....The rest of the quote from above..
"I spend a lot of time listening to Bob Dylan, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown and John Prine. I love the new Garbage compilation. But my friends can't figure out what it is with Buffett. They lose sight of Buffett's musical acumen because of the surreal ritual of his live show: fins hats that block your view, men in coconut bras and grass skirts and heavy drinking.
This is mostly a Midwest deal and I don't care for it either. I've seen Buffett at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Bayview Park in Miami and a Super Bowl XX party when the Bears were in New Orleans. None of that weird stuff went down at those shows."

Although I am not a licensed travel agent, I would be more than willing to be the agent in charge of such an undertaking.Snowparrot wrote:said Jim in Raleigh...Here is an idea: the Margaritville Travel Agency-sell an all in one package with a ticket to the show, flight and room at the place he is playing.

That's all fine, but is he a true PH.
I wonder if he even knows who JB is and if he has ever been to a concert.
I have no credentials except that I love to travel, have done lots of it, LOVE Jimmy and love PH's in general.
My reasons would be purely selfish......I would hope Jimmy would call me and we could meet over drinks on the third bar stool left of the sunset in St. Bart's.
