You would think the daughter would have noticed the smell and investigated instead of finding the body when looking for a cat.

That's what I thought...and I also wonder how she got in the closet to begin with? The article didn't mention if there were any obvious signs that it was a homicide, but I don't know if it wasn't why you would want to spend your last moments in a closet.
