I'm greatly saddened by the fact that I have not yet heard the Marley version. Anyone have it on MP3? Or a like where I might sample it?

Redemption Song lyrics
Old pirates, yes, they rob I;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the 'and of the Almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfil de book.

Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.
Guitar break
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfil de book.
Won't you help to sing
Dese songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever had:
Redemption songs
All I ever had:
Redemption songs:
These songs of freedom,
Songs of freedom.

I love the Redemption Song, but to me, it felt out-of-place. I'd rather not see it in the middle of Pirate

I agree...let's hear the whole song.

That way, I could still hear Jimmy say something cute at the end of the original...

Like:

"I'm going to get drunk uptown."

or

"I'm going to have a birthday party in this town." :lol:

Right at the very end after "I feel like I've drown...."

I'm partial to the classic but I am enjoying the new version live.

Changes and little surprises are cool . . . nothing wrong with them.

I agree, I just thought this one felt "forced"

I have not heard the medley yet but am wondering how a song about slavery goes with APL@40.
Musically I'm sure it flows as they're both in the key of G, I'm just talking lyrically. Redemption Song is usually the first song I start picking when I pick the my guitar. Great song!

Can anyone upload it somewhere?

I'm partial to Ziggy Marley and The Chieftains version:

Pirate is always one of my favorite parts of a JB concert (along with OPH) and some of the surprises thrown in.

Keep the combo in the rotation this year, the revert to classic. Nothing wrong with mixing it up temporarily, but Pirate stands on its own and in my mind will always be the perfect final encore

(although Nautical Wheelers, He Went to Paris and Survive have filled that role strongly as well)

The Redemption Song version was great for this tour. It should be left for this tour so it remains special and Jimmy should return to the classic. Or do something else special as an ending next tour.

i couldn't vote for this one... As long as it's played I could care less... love the classic and once "redemption song" was added it rocks as well...

Bottom line... one of my favorite song to hear live any way it's performed.... I need my "Mother Mother Ocean," any way it's served up is fine with me.

The new version served well for the time being, I think they should go back to the classic for the 2008 tour!

Honestly, the first time I heard it live in AC, I didn't care for it, now it has grown on me. I like em both. And agree with everyone else, he should do the whole song. I love reggae.

I like both versions, but when i first heard Nadirah sing it last year her voice literally gave me chills. I don't think it's as much a song about slavery but one of overcoming slavery. The line about emancipating yourself from mental slavery, was from a Marcus Garvey speech. It was also the last song Bob Marley ever performed and it's an awesome tribute for Jimmy and the band to do. So i hope they keep it up. Or do the whole thing [smilie=eye.gif]
