I saw Kenny Chesney this past Saturday at Bristow Va. Thought you BNers would like to hear about it.
First, I have to admit to NOT being a huge fan, though we do own several of his CDs. I do like several of his tunes though.

After hearing a great set by Texan Pat Green and then a really good set by Sugarland, we had to wait a long time before Kenny made his,, entrance.. you woulda thought it was Elvis. It was preceeded by guys shooting t-shirts into the audience.. (sound familiar?) then a video of a Captain Jack Sparrow look alike hawking Cruzan Rum, then Kenney himself did the same.. (I love Cruzan but it was crass in my opinion.) Then the video switched to "Kenny Cam" an apparently live shot from a camera mounted on his hat as he made his way to the stage. A huge curtain with a skull wearing a Stetson and flashing psychedelics was dropped and a 12 piece band with 5 horns was revealed. Kenny moved through all his hits at an ear piecing volume, each tune had a change of guitars for the star but he rarely touched the neck. I counted 6 guitarists on stage for a couple tunes. Behind the stage, a huge high def screen showed shots from live cameras, (the onstage hand helds making us sea sick with their consant rocking and uneccesary zooms,) all mixed with videos of beach parties and parking lots... (Hmmmm..) The lighting was extremely complex, and irritating to me when they pointed several bright spots at the audience, (I think they were trying to blind us.) I was chafing a bit, half way through in part because of the audience; about 70% screaming, and I mean Beatle like screaming females and maybe 5% Kenny look alikes, all short guys with cut off black Ts and Stetsons. It wasn't until Mr. Chesney finally lowered the volume and actually played an acoustic to Blue Rocking Chair that I was able to really enjoy a tune. When the SunGoes Down was also well done but I have to say most of the performance was mediocre. It was very slickly produced, overly produced.

In one of his older tunes he sings, "Now I know how Jimmy buffett feels." He should know, exactly how JB feels on stage at least.

My missus is much more of a fan than I am but even she was a bit let down. I hope he cuts down on the massive production and especially the volume if I have to go see him again.. I'm hoping not.

you might think it cheesy but it's Chesney. Nicole and I had a great time at Kenny's concert. Nothing like Buffett to us, nothing to compare. Totally different styles that view the island life/style a different way.

DC's local "Shock Jock" Elliot Segal went to that concert over the weekend. He was talking about it this morning and referred to Chesney as "Jimmy Buffett Jr." or something to that effect.

why pathetic? I am not a Chesney fan either . . . and I am a die hard Parrot Head but Jimmy does stuff that my friends find less than cool like have Tiki Gods eat gigantic fake cheeseburgers and/ or do bad covers of Bruce Springsteen hits . . . to each our own; I guess.

I like Chesney...as long as I'm having a good time, I enjoy the kitch.

I saw this same production in Frisco earlier this year, it rained (hard) through Sugarland, but thankfully the rain lifted for Kenny.
While I noticed the pyrotechnics upon the opening, and the POTC inspired film at the beginning was fun, I didn't notice some of the things you mentioned.
The volume in Frisco was standard concert level...I guess it depends on how close to the speakers you were sitting.

Of course, we make it a practice to ALWAYS bring ear plugs (to any concert) in case our seats are close to speakers.

I agree that your going to get a lot of girls screaming at Kenny. He's known for having a nice body, and smile, and so....the ladies love him.

I enjoyed the film clips in the background during the songs...lots of artists have a screen behind them with live shots.

Kenny can play guitar (evidenced by his acoustic performances), but he's very active on stage during his shows, so it really doesn't bother me that he has backup guitarists....in fact, in Frisco, he came out and did "Something Sexy about the Rain" with just him and his guitar (along with a couple of others), because of the torrential downpour earlier...it was beautiful. He said it was the first time he'd ever performed it live...he'd never even practiced it, but that it just seemed appropriate.

*shrug* Anyway, it's nice that you indulge your lovely lady by going to the shows of the artists she likes.
My husband wasn't a big a Buffett fan when we first met...Now he is.

I saw Kenny Chesney in 2004 when Keith Urban opened. keith Urban blew him away.

With that said, Chesney does have a few things going for him...He spends his winters in the US Virgin Islands and, only in his 30's, he's selling out stadiums.

He gives his fans what they want and he is going to be worth $100 million (if he's not already there) in pretty short order.

Not bad for a shorter, balding guy with a so so voice...

He just needs to learn how to sail. The videos showing him as a Caribbean Cowboy on his 70 or 80 foot long boat that looks like a speed boat with cabins would be a little more authentic if he was on a sailboat.

I guess I am a little too self aware to slam someone who at my age figured out how to get a house on St. John.
