I was working that night at the Americana.
The band was staying there, and his helicopter was on it's way to our airport.
Never arrived.

Another one that I'll never forget where I was and what I was doing when I heard the "news"

I "grew up" living in the Dallas area - it hit a lot of us hard as we watched him from the Cellar Days forward.

Such a loss. He had finally gotten hold of his demons and was at his best.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

I was at the show. Awesome encore. SRV, Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray all on stage. I always thought the helicopter was going back to Chicago.

They were heading to Chicago, but stopping by Americana first.

Back then, most bands that played ALpine stayed at Americana.

Well I did a little reading. They were all headed back to Chicago, to their hotel where they were staying. Very common for bands, much like Buffett to stay in Chicago and commute to Alpine Shows.

Trust me, they had been staying at Americana. I saw them firsthand the day before the show.

RIP Stevie, being from Dallas, and originally from Oak Cliff myself I can remember some of the old haunts...

Thanks for the memories.

Did you hear the crash as you were leaving the show?

No. I didn't hear about until early afternoon the next day. I don't think anyone really heard it. No one went to look for them until the chopper did not show up in Chicago at the scheduled arrival.

I remember that sad day well.

I was driving that Monday morning from Chicago to Lafayette IN, and listening to WXRT as the info was being revealed.

First it seemed they were saying Eric Clapton was on that helicopter, and I was thinking... NO NO NO!

Then when they started saying it was Stevie, I was thinking... NO NO NO!

But my eyes were doing their own thing...
Hey Snake, we need more wine!
