My initial reaction was like that of many BNers... Something on the order of, "Jerks." But that was not the case. The police got a bad rap and I want to correct that.
From another thread:
Okay, here's what happened. The town had an ordnance: no tailgating before 2:00PM. The police went along Route 1 checking lots and shut down more than one private lot prior to 2:00, including the End Zone. They were very nice about it, but noted that the hotel knew the rules and never should have let people into their lot early. The police even required the End Zone to refund the parking money they had collected. If you were a guest in the hotel you could of course leave your car in the lot; it was the back "tailgating" parking lot that was shut down.ScarletB wrote:I think if you're staying there it's different, from what SGH communicated it was a matter of "These are the rules and we're enforcing them" I don't think they had any cause to do it and the End Zone certainly seems to be PH phriendly.icarus wrote:Seems like conflicting threads. And it's a whole bunch of them!
We have reservations to stay at the motel, so I'm not sure how that plays into the equation. Also, I have to wonder what would cause the police to come on to a private lot and kick people out, unless there were complaints.
I guess one of the following could happen:
1. The owner of the lot could call the police with a false claim of some type of disorderly conduct, etc., causing the cops to come and kick the people out, thus emptying the lot, allowing the lot owner to make more money by having a second wave of people pay and park in the same lot.
(yes, the above is quite a conspiracy theory, but hey . . . it sounds interesteing. Not the case yesterday.
2. The owner of the lot could call the police with a legitimate claim of some type of disorderly conduct, etc. causing the cops to come and kick the people out, in hopes of deturring any further escalation of negative events. Not the case yesterday.
3. The cops see a bunch of people parking in a private lot, and decide that they just want to throw their weight around. So, they go and just start kicking people out of the lot. Not the case yesterday. They did require everyone leave, but it wasn't a case of throwing their weight around.
In all honesty I can't see the cops messing with people unless there's a true need for it. I would think that they would just assume let people have a good time and not waste time on people who are behaving, and try to keep tabs on the true potential problem areas that may brew during such an event.
This is just my 2 cents, but I'm sure we will here all about it tomorrow some time.
It was a blessing in disguise. Lot P-10 was a blast. Very Great Woods-like. P-10 opened early (noon? maybe a little earlier?), as I hope it will next weekend.
What happened with lots being shut down yesterday was not the fault of the police, but some combination of the Town of Foxborough and the Gillette management.
