“No particular reason we chose Canada,” cast member Chris Taylor was quoted as saying on The Sydney Morning Herald’s Web site. “We just thought they’d be a country who the cops wouldn’t scrutinize too closely, and who feasibly would only have three cars in their motorcade — as opposed to the 20 or so gas guzzlers that Bush has brought with him.”

Bush is a frequent target of “the Chaser,” as are Australian politicians. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the stunt proved security was working.

“Whatever you think of the humor of ‘the Chaser,’ the honest truth is they were clearly not going to harm anybody in a physical way,” Downer said. “They presumably were, as is the nature of their show, aiming to humiliate a lot of well-known people.”
sounds like it wasn't to me...

While they figured it out eventually, it doesn't seem like they knew which cars were supposed to be in the motorcade.

Police waved the motorcade through two checkpoints before pulling it over near the Intercontinental Hotel where Bush is staying.

many "well-known people" don't need any help being humiliated.

While that may be...you can't take any chances with the life of a world leader...regardless of any personal/political feelings about him.
It's their job to ensure his safety.

If it's common knowledge that a comedy/satire group might target the President, then a group with terrorist motivations might take advantage of that knowledge.

They should have been able to spot them and stop them by the first checkpoint.

Just saying.

My understanding from local media here (and knowing these guys from watching them on TV) is that the intention was to do a comedy stunt - expecting to get caught at the first checkpoint.

When they got through 2 - and were within 10 meters of the Intercontinental Hotel (where GW is staying) - they pooped themselves and doubled back away from the hotel - aware they would be putting themselves in danger with the Secret Service and emerged from the car as Osama - at a safe distance from the hotel.

I'm not faulting the "Chasers" for their stunt/satire, it's the Cops fault for letting them get that close.

Occasionally, news people in the US test Airport security or other high target sites to see if they can breech security.
Usually they can....unfortunately. Image

I understood that :)

The media (other stations ) are raising hell at the Chasers for doing it -when I think it should be directed at the security that let them through .....

Check out their website and see some of their previous stuff - these guys are just plain crazy!
