File Sharing Between Computers W/XP & Vista

I've been trying to figure out how to set up file sharing between my laptop and desktop and have had no luck. My desktop is running Vista and my laptop is using XP. I can get them to see each other on the network but can't access the files on each other. Has anyone managed to successfully file share between a Vista and XP computer? I've seen and experimented with many different sets of instructions online, but have never gotten it to work. It's been a while since I've tried, so I don't recall exactly what I've done. If anyone has instructions that work or suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Sorry, I'm no help. I give new Microsoft OSes at least a year to work bugs out before I'll pay for them.

I'm not a fan of being a beta tester, and paying for the opportunity.

I can tell there are tons of problems with Vista. Not just based on my own experiences, but also in dealing with customer service with various companies. For example, with the router I bought, the company won't even talk to you if you have Vista. They direct you to their web site which has no useful info on Vista on there. If you have XP, they'll help you all they can on the phone.

Check your Maximum Allowed Shares. If this value is set to 1, that is filled by the computer itself. Try setting the value to 2 and see if it will work.

Actually, the new toy has XP on it. I plan to keep it that way. I have planned uses for the new one that require some stability and Vista isn't going to cut it at this point.

As for the desktop, I'm not going to the effort to downgrade an operating system. Eventually Vista will get the troubles worked out. In the meantime, I'll deal with it. My biggest hassle is running AOL on Vista. That's like 2 negatives making a catastrophe!
