If you get a chance to watch this documentary on PBS.....DON'T MISS IT!
We are losing WWII veterans at a rate of 1,000 a day.....this is THEIR story in THEIR words.....
just so moving and amazing.

I seriously regret not talking to my Dad more about this......I don't know if he really would have talked about it, but I was young and self-absorbed and just didn't 'get it'........
Ken Burns really did us all a great service making this documentary...

Thanks for the heads up...doubt I'll be able to watch all of it, but I'll try to catch as much as possible.
My Dad & his brother & another Uncle were WWII vets.
I was lucky enough to talk to him about it some, & his brother is still alive & I've talked to him about his experiences.
They were both in the War in the Pacific...brothers stationed together on the same ship. (Navy)
My other Uncle (Army) was in the War in Europe.
Fortunately, all came home alive.

My dad was in WW II.
He was injured twice.
His last 'job' was so awful he would rarely speak of it.
He was driving a bulldozer in Auschwitz
When my brother joined the the Royal Signals, my dad was so angry. He just did not want his only son going off to the army. I am grateful my brother retired after 25 years of service with all his working parts still attached.

I do, too....NOW!
When I finally went to Gettysburg, about ten years after my Dad passed, it was such an incredible experience for me......He never went there and it was sort of like I got to do it 'for' him....
Normandy is another place I want to go 'for' him.......someday I will!

My dad was a P 51 pilot in WWII...and we talk more and more about it these days....and I make him record his stories.....He has some great ones...I wish I could have taken him to Ohio this month.. They had the biggest reunion of P 51 pilot's ever....I showed him the website and we went thru those attending and he knew quite a few of them ....It would have really been a great thing to do...in light of his recent health issues..
Mom taught History at the College of Charleston and you didn't dare mention "The Civil War"...or you heard "There was nothing Civil about it!"

It was "The War Between the States"...

Ken Burns also did a PBS Program on the
Civil War 'er I mean the War Between the States.
Didn't check to see if it would be airing anytime soon, but anything Ken Burns does is pretty good, so you might want to set up a notification if PBS does that.

The Marines aren't kidding when they say "Once a Marine, always a Marine." My uncle was a WWII veteran, Marine. He was aboard a troop ship on the way to Europe when the war ended, and shortly thereafter he mustered out and went home to become a dentist. When he died in 1989 there was a bronze plaque laid in front of his gravestone: "PFC USMC"....
