For what it's worth, the Grateful Dead didn't come up with the term Deadhead. To deadhead means to ride for free, i.e. stowaway. It was a word long before it was used as a term to describe the fans. And, as far as my (very limited) knowledge goes, they never did anything formal with it, even when they became a huge marketing machine in the late 80's.
Take me for what I am, a star newly emerging.

so really we could be called margarita-heads? or beer heads?

I know I've heard this at a JB concert:

"hey buddy, can I bum a lei?"

lei-heads?

The Grateful Dead became a huge marketing machine as far back as the early 70s when they inked a licensing deal with Winterland, Inc. for t-shirts and other merch but they never had "Deadhead" trademarked, at least to my knowledge. I never knew "Parrothead" was trademarked either but apparently it has been.

Actually that was me that said that, not "popcornjack" but thanks for the info. I can understand Buffett and his legal eagles wanting to protect song titles such as Margaritaville and Cheeseburger In Paradise which are rightfully his but I believe they've crossed the line with "Carrotheads".

This is an absolute disgrace!

Post by gstanch »

As if saturating his fans with republished, boring, redundant concert CD's and DVD's with the same 20 songs isn't bad enough but he is attacking an innocent childrens club at a theme park? Not to mention, his ridiculous tour schedule that doesn't allow many Parrotheads (in the tri state area for example) to witness his live shows w/o paying scalpers $150 for lawn seats he goes and does this. I read a previous comment that he could possibly not even know about it well shame on him, he should know about. Not quite sure what he plans to gain of a venture of this kind. This is just a disgrace, I'm ashamed to call myself a Jimmy Buffett fan these days. I'm glad I didn't give him a dime this year for his concert tour. I figured I'll save myself a few hundred dollars, plus I saw the same show in last year and in 2005,2004,2003,2002...1997!!

One of the several definitions of "deadhead" as a noun is in reference to a plane or train or commercial truck, etc. that is traveling without passengers or cargo. To travel as a deadhead is to travel in a deadheading vehicle. I've never heard the term deadhead applied to a stowaway. I have deadheaded many times with people on board (deadheads) but I always new they were there. 8)

Now I'm confused, just how do you interpret that list anyway? :o :o :o

(BTW there is NO trademark for Children's Amusements for Parrothead.... Sometimes I wonder if this is just a ploy to see if they can gather enough evidence to create a registration, not necessarily a "cease and desist" order?)

Maybe people missed this because it was in the last post of the page.

But come, first of all it's the New York Post. The National Enquirer has better journalism. Second of all, it's Page 6, which is quite possibly the lowest of the low in regards to journalism. I seriously have to question the intelligence of those who aren't taking this with a grain of salt. If it was in the NY Times, USA Today, Washington Post, CNN, etc. I might take this more seriously.

Has anyone considered that just maybe they didn't tell us everything. Perhaps as many have suggested, Jimmy doesn't know much about it, and it's purely his lawyers acting on his behalf. Perhaps, Jimmy told his lawyers to go after it. I don't know and I think it's clear we don't have all the facts, so until we do, I personally don't think it's right to judge him on this.

We may not have the facts but the story quotes Six Flags Representative, Wendy Glodberg who seems to confirm the suit. But one thing they seeemed to get wrong is that they said in the article he is suing for copyright infringement. I believe it would actually be Trademark infringement.

Whether he knows of this or not his lawyers are working under his command. As smart a businessman as he is I can't see them doing anything major like filing or threatening to file a law suit with out his knowledge.

Do we have all the facts? Perhaps not, but it follows the same pattern as when Jimmy and/or his lawyers have gone after others who may or may not have been infringing on his turf.

The discussion hit some local radio waves out in NJ. On the "Free Beer & Hot Wings Show," it was mentioned how ridiculous this lawsuit is. As they said, "what's next, is he going to sue McDonald's for selling cheeseburgers, something he clearly invented?"
