I agree. The language on the sign isn't the best.flyboy55 wrote: In considering option iv) above, it just occurred to me that there may be a simple explanation for the wording of the sign and I may be misunderestimating the seriousness of the langauge problem in this nation!
Do you agree with this punishment?

C'mon...they're selling drugs at school. How smart can they be??FunkHouse9 wrote:That was my first thought, although someone selling drugs would probably be watching their money more carefully.Carolinadreamin' wrote:dnw wrote:I agree with the punishment, but what I can't understand is ....a 14 yr. old with $500 at school?

steral from another student at your own risk...
my mom was a librarian in our jr high school. one time tony jr. got sentenced to a week of washing the library desks after school after getting caught writing on one. when tony sr. found out, he suggested 2 weeks would be more appropriate.
a few years later tony sr. got gunned down in my favorite italian restaurant...

The judges in our county often order punishment like this rather than any incarceration since the jails are so crowded and humiliation seems to be far more effective.
And reality check time. Check out most kids' backpacks. Even if they don't have cash, they have hundreds of dollars worth of cellphones, iPods, handheld video games....plus at the local coffeehouse I saw a lot of high schoolers with far more cash than I had as an adult.

Texas Judge, Ted Poe is noted for this type of punishment as well.
I heard him speak at a conference once, I wanted him to be king of the world by the end of it......if you ever get a chance to hear him speak, DO IT!
My favorite story was one he told about taking a Chevy Camaro away from a young car thief and giving it to an elderly lady to drive while her car was being fixed. The kid had stolen and wrecked her Buick Riviera......
She was quite delighted to drive the Camaro for a few weeks.....
oh, the kid had to pay for her gas, too!

I'm not a mom...so I know nothing about raising kids.
However, I would have gone for more public service rather than public humiliation.
A few days cleaning cages at the animal shelter...a few more visiting nursing homes...a few raking leaves/doing lawn work for the elderly/disabled...serving at a soup kitchen...etc. etc.
It would be productive and she could learn a lot.
$500.00 gives "lunch money" a whole new meaning

Re: Do you agree with this punishment?
I voted no just because I disagree with the sign. What you say becomes what you do. I think it should have said: "I got caught stealing in school, and I'm not going to do it again."
I agree with the concept of the sign, but it does label the girl in her mind as someone who is not going to study in school and probably will steal again.
Labels on teenagers have a very strong impact. If you're labeled a loser, you're gonna be a loser. Or have a hard time breaking out of it, anyway. The girl needs help to reform and this doesn't give it to her.
