I do. It totally sounds like something I would do if my kid every tried to pull something like that.

SILVERTHORNE – "I steal in school, not study."

That's the sign 14-year-old Stacia Worthington held up outside a gas station during rush hour Tuesday morning. Stacia's mother, Desiree, works at the gas station and made the sign after she caught her daughter stealing $500 from a classmate in school.

"She got three days suspension. The first day was kind of easy for her, the second day she went out to the landfill and did some recycling for her county, and today she's going to learn humility," said Desiree Worthington.

Onlookers had different opinions about Desiree's decision.

"There's other forms of punishment I think without humiliating the girl in front of the entire Summit County. I think it's disgusting," one said.

"I think the mother knows her child the best," said another.

Silverthorne resident Bruce Miller says he thinks the punishment fit the crime.

"She's probably not having any fun, but you know, it's a lesson she probably needs and congratulations to her parents for helping her out here," he said.

As for what Stacia thinks, Desiree said, "Right now she's a little angry with me."

Desiree did keep an eye on Stacia, let her come inside every hour to warm up and brought her muffins and hot chocolate.

3 days would have been good for $5, for $500 it should have been 3 weeks.

What's wrong with it?

I guess my biggest question is what the heck another kid was doing with $500 at school and letting anyone know about it.

Absolutely nothing IMO. I was just surprised at a person's quote in the article that they didn't agree with it.

I think it is a splendid idea.

All of it except this part.

Muffins and hot chocolate? C'Mon. If she needed to warm up, make her run laps.

Selling drugs??? Collecting money for a charity???

There is more to this story than what is being told in this article. Also, anyone caught stealing money at our school would probably be thrown out.

I'm not surprised by that at all. Disgusted, but not surprised.

I hate punishing my keets but I am finding that taking TV or a PC away just doesn't work anymore and "time out" is just a joke.

If that mom felt that that kid would only learn a lesson by teaching her some humility, then I say, way to go mom.

It's time to stop judging the parents of our society for doing what is right for their family. For years, society has tried to be the kids best friend AND parent and I don't think that's working. It's time to get back to good, old fashioned parenting....

IMO

I think the punishment is OK, but I strenuously object to the wording of the sign: "I steal in school not study".

My question would be: who devised the wording of the sign?

Perhaps a better construction would have been one of the following:

i) I don't study in school, I steal in school.

ii) My time in school is spent stealing not studying.

iii) I am a common thief.

iv) Sure I did something wrong (broke the law), but so did _ _ _ _ and he isn't getting punished!

In considering option iv) above, it just occurred to me that there may be a simple explanation for the wording of the sign and I may be misunderestimating the seriousness of the langauge problem in this nation!

How about (for the t-shirt):
"I stole a classmate's money, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt"

or: "I'm a lowlife thief so you better not let me near your money or your property but I'll try to do better, I swear."

And hey, what WAS a kid doing with $500 in school ? Mighty suspicious for sure. [smilie=huh-ani.gif]
