FIRE ANTS MUST DIE
If you've ever been bit by a fire ant, then you know what I mean.
I wonder what people have tried AND had success with?!?!?
Any thoughts / suggestions???

My neighbor used kerosene on them last summer Joe.Sidew13 wrote:If you've ever been bit by a fire ant, then you know what I mean.

Didn't ignite it. Kind of like when you pour it down a yellow jacket nest in the ground.
How widespread are they?

Joe there is this stuff called Amdro, you can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot. Its granules that will nail those mounds in a couple of days. It is the best stuff I have used.

Agreed. Amdro is good stuff. We have fire ants in Texas.UAHparrothead wrote:Joe there is this stuff called Amdro, you can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot. Its granules that will nail those mounds in a couple of days. It is the best stuff I have used.
Kerosene doesn't work in the long run because it doesn't kill the Queen and is super dangerous.
Besides, it'll kill your grass, too.

Here is a map that shows the "Potential United States Range Expansion of the Invasive Fire Ant" (2006)
However, it seems that I heard this summer that they had been seen in Nebraska.
So maybe they are more hardy than previously estimated.

They are really nasty critters and we have them bad in SC. Amdro does seem to work. There was a product that was an aerosol and it had a metal wand that you stuck down into the mound and it would kill the queen and the mound instantly. I have not been able to find it in several years though.

And if you don't have fire ants in your area, I pray you NEVER do. They actually swarm like bees when they attack

I like to fish along the roadside borrow canals near Everglades City.
There are two things there are lots of - big gators and fire ant nests.
The gators are a concern. The fire ants terrify me. Whenever I hook a tarpon or snook, I spend as much time looking down at my feet making sure I don't step on a nest. As an experimet I once stuck a plastic pop bottle in a mound. Within 30 seconds it was covered with thousands of the little buggers that were trying to bite it to death.
I don't know how those of you in fire ant country can let your dogs out in your yards. Nastiest critters I have ever encountered.

I don't want to live on that kind of island
No, I don't want to swim in a roped off sea.
Too much for me, too much for me
I've got to be where the wind and the water are free.

Fire.
it seriously works if you dig down in the mound deep enough to reach the queen, pour a ton of gas in the mound and then light her up!!!

We used to dig them up and use fire when I was a kid, nowadays I just use the Ortho granules you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot. Cover the mound with a good sprinkling and then soak it with a hose, it works pretty well.
Not as much fun as fire though...

fire ants are the devil incarnate.
the scars from their bite eventually goes away, but are more painful than a wasp or bee sting, IMO..
