Here is a review of Robert Earl Keen's show at Toad's Place in Richmond.
Good job, Brandon Reynolds

I gotta quote a couple of paragraphs. Keen is so good at the LIVE show.
...But he tucked back into his beer-hoisting greats, the roots-rock and blues that carry the stamp of his songwriting talent. Those classics offered another interesting observation, too: After a song is played for the 10,000th time, it necessarily evolves in the mouth of the singer. Keen’s live versions of his songs remind us that they’re living things, that they necessarily change to avoid staleness and to keep singers like Keen from going insane...
...But it culminates with a high-velocity version of “The Road Goes on Forever,” speeding through the song and getting the audience all riled up before launching into a round-robin set of solos: incredible banjoing, steel guitaring, and a huge jam by guitarist Rich Brotherton. Keen and his band seem to be cultivating a Jimmy Buffett kind of feel, very loose and easy, and I think it works well, mainly because he’s better than Buffett...

Haven't posted in a while, but noticed somebody was discussing REK. I've been listening to his discs for awhile and have always enjoyed them. One day I just happened to stumble upon a calendar for the Music Mill in Indy and saw REK's name on it. I was pretty surprised that he even came to Indy, and figured I'd better take in the show in case the opportunity didn't present itself again in the future. Absolutey unbelievable. His discs are great but don't compare to a live show. As the previous reviews said, the jams his band put together are incredible. Some lasting up to 8 or 10 minutes, all very fast paced and incredible to listen to. I was all teeth during the show and would encourage anybody that has the opportunity to check one out.

Just saw him Friday and Saturday nights here in NYC. Both shows were really good and he changed the setlist for the second show. The songs he did Saturday that he had also done Friday weren't in the same place in the set. For instance, he did Amarillo Highway about halfway though Friday's show but opened with it Saturday. I don't have total recall, it's tough at my age, but here are the songs I remember hearing, in no particular order. I know I'm leaving some out.
What I Really Mean
Feeling Good Again
Gringo Honeymoon
Amarillo Highway
Corpus Christi Bay
Dreadful Selfish Crime
Merry Christmas From The Family
The Road Goes On Forever
The Front Porch Song
Copenhagen
That Bucking Song
Five Pound Bass
For Love
I'm Going To Town
Furnace Fan
Wild Wind
I'm Coming Home
Long Chain
It's The Little Things
Let The Music Play
Whenever Kindness Fails
Mr. Wolf & Mamabear
No Kinda Dancer
Not A Drop Of Rain
Tangled Up In Blue (last song Saturday)

Great list of songs, LIPH. Thanks for posting them.
Some of my favs...It's The Little Things, No Kinda Dancer, Feelin Good Again...
Six of the big "sing-a-long" songs in a row there starting with Merry Christmas...oh, yeah, they're in no particular order.
Tangled Up In Blue is a good song for REK. Heard him do that recently. (Did he close with that at Big State?)

I don't remember how he closed his set at Big State. The Road Goes On Forever was the last song Friday, next to last Saturday.
This may sound strange because it's not a real upbeat song, but I really liked Dreadful Selfish Crime. That was one of the songs he did both nights.
