Corona Replaces Buffett with Chesney

Post by phjim »

An article from Brandweek mentions Corona will sponsor Chesney's upcoming tour: "Corona Goes Country With Kenny Chesney"
http://www.brandweek.com/bw/news/recent ... 1003670371

Chesney fills the void in the marketing mix that was created when Jimmy Buffett was signed last year by Anheuser-Busch to back Land Shark Lager, brewed by the Margaritaville Brewing company, which is actually A-B’s brewing facility in Jacksonville, Fla.

A-B has had an ownership stake in Corona Extra brewer Grupo Modelo since 1993. Corona Extra, the No. 1 imported beer, had sponsored Buffett’s Parrot Head tour since 1986.

But Land Shark hasn't taken a bite out of the Mexican brew, having sold less than 258,000 cases for the year ended Oct. 7, according to Information Resource Inc. Meanwhile, Corona Extra sales grew 2% during the same period to 40.6 million cases.

..and it probably will never. As someone who really has given LandShark the 'old college try' many times--i just can't give it my endorsement (and I really, honestly wanted to).

First, it really just doesn't taste that good. I've gone few a cases just to make sure it wasn't just a bad batch or maybe they were still tweeking the flavor--but no. All were consistantly dissappointing :(. It's like someone simply slapped a 'LandShark' label on some brew recipe that was laying around.

Secondly, at an average of $7.99 a sixer, LandShark had better be a great tasting beer to make a dent in Corona. It definitely falls short there. Don't get me wrong, if offered one @ a party or tailgate, I'll drink it with no qualms--just wouldn't buy it to stock my coolers. Not to be a downer but just a dissapointment because I know JB probably never had any input into the LandShark recipe :(

I'm shocked, absolutely shocked, to find out that Corona is gonna sponsor Chesney instead of me. There ain't no dang justice! :)

OTOH, I'm not sure you could pay me enough money to promote Landshark Lager. But then again, they're not pounding down my door either. :)

If Landshark gets pulled by AB, there is a SAHWEEEEEEEEEET Landshark surfboard at a bar in Saugatuck that I want to swipe outta the bar when nobody's looking.

I think Red Stripe is more of a natural sponsor for Jimmy. He has more of a connection to the Caribbean and Red Stripe doesn't need a lime or lemon to make it drinkable. :pirate:

No, I've consumed both, one right after the other. Corona has more flavor and character.

Yes, this *is* damning with faint praise. :)

A Tale from the Recent Past Land Shark Makes my fin drop ^^

Yo Ho BNers:

Years ago (1998) I tried to broker a deal (for no compensation) for Jimmy to use a brewer in S. Florida I had discovered in my quest for a cool local miocrobrew. (Miami Brewing Co., maker of a fine lager. "Hurricane Reef" to produce a "Parrot Head" beer.) If you can find some try it.

At the time I was told that JB was going to sign with Anheuser Busch due to the "financial incentive." (As we keep haivng all brewers merge into big conglomerates, we will only have AB and Coors/Molson...Support your local brewer!)

Too bad as Hurricane Reef is an excellent tasting high quality brew that shames Corona and that godawful swill "Landshark." Not only is LS terrible, it is a crappy, watery poor tasting lager, tolerable only when you are dying of thirst and only if nearly frozen...but also it is outrageously expensive for the quality. I bet is some sort of Budweiser/Busch crap, complete with rice and "driftwood aging." Unlike most of the things JB markets, the proof is in the pudding. The stuff tastes terrible and is over priced. Even Jimmy's name cannot help this poor "beer" IMHO. Sorry! You can't even get AB products in Germany as it violates the Reinheitsgebot, the German beer purity law that dates from the 15th Century. Only hops, water and barley allowed. (No rice, sugar and fillers.)

Oh well, it's "all about the money don't chu know." I'll spend my hard earned $$ on greenies (Heineken) Red Stripe Good German beers and local premium micro brews for 7.99/six pack. I appreciated Corona sponsoring JBs shows, so I would drink a lot of it, but now, no reason to, but it is good for a cooler to the beach. Also, Kenny puts on a great show but he is no Buffett. (OFF SOAPBOX) Thanks. :pirate:

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't think either one of them are very good. They are just selling a frame of mind if that makes any sense.

Hurricane Reef is good stuff. I usually pick some up at Jerry's when I am on Sanibel Island. :D

I just picked up some Spanish Peaks Honey Raspberry as one of my birthday treats. Used to be made in Montana (when it was really, really good). Now I think they make it in Maryland.

Funny thing is, while Spanish Peaks was one of the first micros in MT, both Kessler and the stuff they brew in Missoula were and are better. When SP went to their fruity lagers, I bailed.

Landshark is crap...that's why it's not selling. Only the German's and the English know how to make good beer.
