chesney , enough already. corona, country radio, etc.
i am usually just a regular reader, not a poster, been a fan of buffett for over 25 years, seen him 80 plus times, twice in tampa this weekend. met him, band members etc. having said that, i am desperately trying to understand the whole kenny chesney thing, i have listened to chesney alot, unfortunately, you can not get away from it. tried to figure it out. with no luck. you can't listen to a country radio station for a hour and not hear him(literally), see him on tv. etc. it seems so corporate created, watered down, bad, mediocre, in laymans terms, it SUCKS i have spent alot of time in the caribbean, and not "three day vacations" and just don't get it. keep in mind i have no problem with artists i don't like or not care for. i still understand it . i guess i am writing this because i travel alot, and can't get away from it and it offends me that people are now thinking if you like buffett, then you like chesney, now the corona thing. anyway, i personally know alot of people who feel this way, but it seems like the music industry is trying to persuade eclectic music lovers that chesney is in the category of buffett, grateful dead, steel pulse, buring spear, etc, or jerry jeff walker, or even michael franks, i have never seen in my whole life of listening to music, literally, anything as dumbfounding and hard to understand as this kenny chesney thing. i get how people like things even though i personally don't. this i don't get! yes i know kenny chesney is a polarizing issue here. but hey, it is a troubling issue for some hardcore buffet fans. yes i know people will say turn it off , don't listen, but kenny chesney is like an annoying mosquito you can't get away from. believe me , i try. kenny chesney is not the heir apparent to jimmy. not even close. i will just listen to reggaeton, latin, reggae, hell even shakira, and something else similar.. enough of the rant, lol , i have to work now. would love to hear other people's opinion on this. have a great day.

I like buffett...I like chesney...I like U2...I like ACDC....I do not think that any of them relate to the other. On that same note I do not think it is an industry conspiracy to replace buffett ( or even follow in his footsteps) with chesney. Chesney has some great song about the islands. He also has some great songs about love, tractors, and teenage pregnancy.

Kenny Chesney is no different than Wal Mart, Tom Cruise, mac n cheese, etc.
Middle of the road stuff that appeals to many but is not in any way special or enlightening.

I don't want to live on that kind of island
No, I don't want to swim in a roped off sea.
Too much for me, too much for me
I've got to be where the wind and the water are free.

a few questions/points
1. Chesney sells
2. He isn't attempting to knock Jimmy off of some imagined throne of getaway, fun, feel-like-summer-all-the-time music. He's just doing what he likes to do.
3. Is Jimmy the standard by which you judge all entertainers?
4. Is Jimmy's material the standard by which you judge all music?

I promised myself I wouldn't comment on Chesney/ Buffett stuff around here but random people keep bringing this up.
My question is "why"?
Chesney sounds nothing like Buffett. He is not trying to be Buffett. He is friends with Buffett. They have worked together. Chesney has given credit to Buffett during his shows when he has done a Buffett cover . . .
Why? They are two separate artists with two separate styles.
Lets just leave it at that.

There is a perfectly valid reason why Heinz has 57 varieties and Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors. Different folks like different stuff.

Parrotheads know nothing about corporate or commercialism as we wear our margaritaville flip flops, make margaritas in our margartiaville mixers, and drink land shark lager.
Also if you listen to "songs from an old blue chair" Chesney wrote most if not all of these songs...(even Buffett doesn't write all of his own songs...many of his most popular among ph's were written by others) But these songs by chesney CAN and DO speak to my heart.... ( sherry's living in paradise, old blue chair, soul of sailor to name a few)
To this day, I still scratch my head at why some ph's are soooo offended by chesney...I just don't get it....he's just another musician, not the antichrist...
again...love ya mean it!

sorry you said "just leave it at that" and i said no i won't leave it at that. left out a word. no sense going back and forth though. the end result for me and many others is hardcore buffett fans who have no use for chesney can't get away from it even when they want to. at least jimmy isnot talking about him in concert. correct me if i am wrong, but jimmy loves loves to do cover songs these day. which one has jimmy done of kennys . i believe the answer is none. and license to chill does not count.sunseeker wrote:HUH? i could not agree with you more. believe me. the problem is not that other people like kenny chesney, the problem is the people that don't , can't get away from it. it is like a parasite. there are forms of music i don't like that i can get away form or not be offended by , but this is out of hand. but yes i agree with you.LIPH wrote:I don't particularly care for Chesney's music but why should I give 2 dumps worth of crap if other people like him?

Alot of musicians rerference each other in songs, concerts, etc. It's only natural that "newer" musician are going to have other (predecessors) musicians who have influenced them. Buffett has mentioned folks that influenced HIM as he was growing as a musician. It doesn't make him any less of a muscian!
