like Rolen; who would want him?
   This is pathetic. There's a professional wrestler who is named Elijah Dukes, and my first thought was "He plays baseball, too?"

Padres sign Randy Wolf

Interesting signing. If he can get healthy, this could be a sleeper move for the Padres. If not, they are out $4 million.

Sox, Twins may be close; what about Ellsbury?
It was after midnight in the Music City, and the Red Sox and Minnesota Twins were exchanging medical information on pitchers Johan Santana and Jon Lester, indicating that the clubs may be closing in on a deal for the two-time Cy Young Award winner, according to Boston Globe reporters Gordon Edes and Amalie Benjamin. It's unclear whether Jacoby Ellsbury was included in their offer, but according to Edes, "There were indications that the Twins would be getting center fielder Coco Crisp, pitcher Justin Masterson and infielder Jed Lowrie in addition to Lester, the winner of the Series-clinching Game 4 and a favorite of pitching coach John Farrell. But that was not confirmed. Repeat, That has not yet been confirmed." Early Tuesday morning, ESPN.com reported that "If the Twins were satisfied with Lester's medicals, it's believed they would accept a swap of him, Coco Crisp, shortstop prospect Jed Lowrie and either highly regarded pitching prospect Justin Masterson or another player. Or if the Twins reversed field and decided they wanted center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury instead, it's believed that would be a 3-for-1 trade -- with only Ellsbury, Masterson and Lowrie going to Minnesota." The Yankees, meanwhile, refused to include another top prospect, pitcher Ian Kennedy, in a package that already included top pitching prospect Phil Hughes and center fielder Melky Cabrera. New Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner told the New York Times, "That's not going to happen. To give up two of the three, there's no chance, not for anybody - unless it's [Sandy] Koufax, and that's not happening." So, does the clock run out on the Twins to get something done with the Yanks? Steinbrenner, who had insisted he would pull the Yankees' offer off the table if a deal weren't struck yesterday, insisted his deadline was real. But artificial deadlines have a tendency to evaporate (see: Rodriguez, Alex). Any team that strikes a deal for Santana will request a 72-hour window to discuss a contract extension, with Santana believed to be looking for at least $25 million a year.

Latest rumors....

Florida trading Dontrelle WIllis AND Miguel Cabrera to Tigers for Uber-prospects Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller

Alex Rios to the Giants for either Matt Cain or Tim Lincecum

Brewers, having lost Fransisco Cordero, tried trading for Chad Cordero, but the Nationals wouldn't make a deal without Rickie Weeks, so the Brewers turned them down.

Royals have an agreement with Jose Guillen. Also making a run at Andruw Jones?

Orioles may send Miguel Tejada to the Angels, if they can get Jeff Barrett or Mike Napoli in the deal. That would leave them free to trade Ramon Hernandez, and sign Michael Barrett

The Santana Watch is on

From the Herald's Rob Bradford (4:01 p.m.): "According to a source familiar with the negotiations the Twins have told [the Red Sox] they want to complete the Johan Santana deal by the end of today."

From the Globe's Nick Cafardo (3:37 p.m.): "We've said here all along that the Los Angeles Angels have the ability to make any deal they desire because they have the chips to make it happen. If they have jumped into the Johan Santana hunt, they pose a real threat to the Red Sox and Yankees for Santana's services. The Angels have extra pitching, so they're able to offer a major league-ready starting pitcher like Ervin Santanta or Jered Weaver as well as a host of positional players - anyone from Howie Kendrick to catcher Jeff Mathis, infielder Brandon Wood, outfielder Reggie Willits, and even Gary Mathews Jr."

"I do not believe the Yankees are out of the Santana hunt yet."

From ESPN's Peter Gammons (3:28 p.m.): "The Twins and Red Sox are getting closer to finalizing a Johan Santana deal. Boston has sweetened its offer by adding a fifth player to the the offer -- outfield prospect Ryan Kalish, a ninth-round draft pick in" 2006.

From ESPN's Buster Olney (3:12 p.m.): "The Yankees and Twins haven't talked at all so far Tuesday about Johan Santana, amid increasing indications Santana is going to be dealt to Boston. The Twins are also talking to the Angels, however."

I can't wait to see which over the hill player(s) whose skills are rapidly declining my lowly, stinky Pirates decide to go after, if any   Wouldn't be surprised if they did nothing. Either way we'll be enduring more losing baseball :(

4:49 p.m., from Jayson Stark
• The Twins and Angels continue to talk about a Johan Santana trade. Many of the same players mentioned in the Miguel Cabrera sweepstakes -- Howie Kendrick, Brandan Wood, Nick Adenhart, and possibly Jeff Mathis or Reggie Willits -- would be included in a package for Santana.

Can't firgure out the Yankees . . .

they don't pony up the money for Dice K . . . Ok . . . but then they spend 40 something million on a nob like Kei Igawa . . . OK . . . . and then they go out and spend 25 million too much on Clemens . . . OK . . . then they won't put Ian Kennedy in a deal for Johan Santana but they will put Phillip Hughes in . . . OK . . . now it appears they lost Santana because of it . . . OK . . . so they sign an oldie Pettite who won't do much . . . OK . . . and now it appears they lost out to Dan Haren at Arizona who is offering Conor Jackson . . . so now the Yankees are stuck with little no pitching and a horrible bull pen . . . OK. :D
