Minni wants Ellsbury.
I'm not sure I'd trade my every day CF who can hit and run, leadoff and play great defense. Most importantly, Jacoby can play on the big stage that is Boston, thriving in the WS. Theo will hear it every time Coco grounds another one to 2nd or strikes out, while Ellsbury wins AL ROY in Minni.
I would drive Ellsbury to Minnesota to get the deal done. OF are easier to find than a premier pitcher at Santana's level.

The Mets are still involved in trade talks as well. It seems they stalled over Gomez and 4 pitching prospects vs. 3 pitching prospects.

Dec 11, 2007 4:31 pm - Buzz: Twins want 2 OF, Mets Decline
...posted by Matthew Cerrone...
In a recent report for SI.com, citing ‘people familiar with those talks,’ Jon Heyman writes…
‘The Mets offered different packages of prospects that included either outfielder Carlos Gomez or outfield prospect Fernando Martinez but not both, declining to include the one extra prospect the Twins requested to clinch the deal according to people familiar with those talks.’
…the way i have heard it, also from people connected to these talks, the Twins want gomez plus four pitching prospects…yes, four…so, based on my understanding, coupled with heyman’s, i think it’s safe to assume that the Mets offered gomez and three pitching prospects, the Twins countered by asking for a fourth pitcher or martinez, and the Mets declined…
…for what it’s worth, over the weekend, i did suggest the two sides were fairly close to agreeing on players for a trade, if they hadn’t already…frankly, i didn’t think it was that close, though…but, wow, i guess it was…
…if this deal could be so close, i am back to having hope again…man, i’m getting dizzy…are you…
…it’s a tough one…i have to assume that at least three of the pitchers are Mike Pelfrey, Phil Humber and Kevin Mulvey, while the fourth could be Joe Smith or Deolis Guerra, though i suppose it could be Aaron Heilman, as well - though he’s far from a pitching prospect at this point…
…it is a lot to give up…it really is, and i can understand the trepidation…but, man, to be that close and pass…jeez…
Earlier today, MetsBlog asked if the Mets should trade Pelfrey, Humber, Mulvey, Guerra and Gomez to the Twins for Santana, who will also require a seven-year contract, and only 56 percent of the 2,400 respondents essentially said, ‘Yes, the Mets should make the trade.’
According to Heyman, while talking to WFAN this afternoon, Boston’s interest is quite ‘cool,’ and - if he had to guess - he still believes that the Yankees will end up acquiring Santana.
…from what i can gather out of people connected to santana, though, is the Yankees have been very, very quiet of late…and, additionally, santana is not too excited about playing in the Bronx, while preferring the Mets then the Red Sox…
…frankly, i think it’d pull the trigger on the pitcher-heavy package, while keeping martinez, and adding Johan Santana to John Maine and Oliver Perez for the next few seasons…my hand will be shaking while doing so, but i think i’d have to do it…

The little that I saw him last year, I liked Carlos Gomez. But if the Mets have a shot at Santana and the Twins want Gomez, I'd let him go. Heilman too. A couple of years ago a lot of teams wanted him, now he's worth about as much as a box of jock straps.

Heilman...ugh.. Can't we pack him up & send him somewhere?? I like Maine though. Mets pitching lookin rather dismal right now....

I actually think the Mets pitching looks fairly good right now.
A healthy Pedro topping a staff with a more experienced Maine and Perez who both won 15 games last year. I see big steps forward for both again. That's why I think getting Santana would be huge.
Santana to Pedro to Maine to OP . . . wow . . .
I am starting to think this really may happen. I like Heilman, who has been one of the better relievers in baseball the last couple of years, and without a certainty regarding Duaner Sanchez' health it's risky to move him, but if that's what it takes . . .
Gomez, Humber, Mulvey, Heilman and gulp, Pelfrey, I guess ya gotta do it. I'd prefer to keep Pelfrey, Fernando Martinez (an OF prospect) and Deolis Guerra (a top pitching prospect down in A ball) and move whomever else. If they can keep it to three pitchers and replace Pelfrey with Gotay, that would be great, but it's probably not feasible.
Perez is a FA after next season and Boras is his agent, so thats something to keep in mind. Pedro is a FA as well as El Duque. By emptying the farm for Santana, the Mets would have only he and Maine secured for '09. I think Pedro would be a worthwhile resign, depending on this year, but Perez could be worth a fortune. Pelfrey, Humber or Mulvey you'd think would step up for at least one of those spots with only 1 FA signing needed. With them gone, the farm would be pretty barren making for an expensive '08 off season.
Maybe by that time Vargas will have put things together, he's still young, but it is something else to look at.

Cubs sign Kosuke Fukudome.
Apparently, the Rangers offered more money, and the White Sox also offered the same as the Cubs, but f**-u chose the Cubs.

Indians are in hot pursuit of Dan Haren...unclear what they are offering, but they are refusing to part with Asdrubal Cabrera, who the A's covet.
It appears the Reds have offered Homer Bailey as part of a deal.

It looks like the A's would want rookie 2B Asdrubal Cabrera and 2 of Cleveland's top pitching prospects. That would be better than the 4 or 5 players offered by Arizona.
Beane is in Phoenix right now evaluating the health of Rich Harden. If he thinks Harden can make it through the season without a major injury, something Harden hasn't done in 3 years, Beane may decide to keep Haren and Blanton and make a run for the AL West.

Harden is the ultimate high risk/high reward pitcher.
If healthy, he could be a top-5 pitcher. If not, he would be useless....

I guess, as a Mets fan, I'm a bit of a pessimist. I HOPE Pedro has a good year, and Maine and Perez are as good as last year, but I don't have a ton of confidence in them. Guess I'm still bitter & disappointed at how the year ended up.

I think they'll be lucky to get 20-25 starts from Martinez. Maine's season was like Jekyll & Hyde, he was a different pitcher (read: much worse) in the second half. Perez is too inconsistent. Hernandez is probably as old as I am. At times Heilman looks like he doesn't want to be in NY and he still wants to be a starter, which he'll never be as long as the Mets keep him. They're a 3rd place team right now.

Pedro will be interesting. I didn't see him pitch at the end of last season, but his stats look pretty decent. Does he still have a good fastball or has he turned into a typical older junkballer? He'll be coming into his last season of this contract so he'll be super motivated to show he's not over-the-hill.
