Mother Daughter Vacation

Post by Flowerfield Girl »

My daughter turns 30 in a few weeks (don't know how, I am barely older than that  ) Anyway, a bunch of us girls were going to Vegas over Valentine's weekend. Now everyone has backed out. Any suggestions where she and I should go? We really don't want to go to Vegas, just the two of us. We can always default to Chicago since it's close, but we have been there many times. Any phun suggestions? Not very often we get out without the kids and men! So she certainly doesn't want to cancel!

Not sure where you live, but my mom and I loved Savannah. We had the best time seeing the beautiful city, going out to Tybee Island and discovering the river walk. Of course, we went on "the book" tour out to Bonaventure Cemetery ... breathtaking. We ate at the Lady and Sons and Mrs. Wilkes' Boarding House. Spent a lot of time just walking the squares and in Forsythe Park.

We stayed in the Nunez Cottage right in the historic district. There are a lot of B&B's in the old part of town ... and some hotels, too.

Just be warned: Savannah is a seductress. Once you fall under her spell, you might never go home.

When my daughter finished grad school the end of May and wasn't due to start her new job till July, we used June to take a road trip... we were still living in CA at that time so she came out from Mass. and we drove up the CA coast, Monterey, Big Sur, San Francisco, Mendocino, Oregon Shakespeare, Portland, and over to Lake Coeur d'Alene where we visited some family, then returned 'inland' via Lassen, Crater Lake NP and Kings Canyon NP. Took almost 3 weeks overall and we had a wonderful time.

She also did go sailing with Dad, and they hit the roller coasters, so he wasn't neglected.

This time of year a road trip along the Gulf Coast would be fun, end at New Orleans. Or if there's not time for that, New Orleans itself is coming back and there's the French Quarter, the restaurants, even a Casino.

Something a little different...Go to Ponce, Puerto Rico. Stay at the hilton, it is very nice, beach, casino and activities. Plan it around Ash Wednesday. Ponce has their own "Mardi Gras" It is a little different but a lot of fun. Spanish isn't necessary lack of it never stopped me from having fun. There are a number of side trips including Coamo hot mineral springs. Southern Puerto Rico you are almost always guaranteed a warm sunny and dry day that time of year.

Punta Cana, is very reasonable and you can stay in an all inclusive.

Red rocks in Sedona, has always been something I have wanted to do.

Spa weekend in Palm Springs.

Florida, treasure island, go see Breeze and Kimmyphin

Why NOT Vegas??

Post by mistrhia »

Vegas is a GREAT place for some Mom/Daughter bonding! :D Over the years, my Mom and I had never managed to really take a "just us" trip. Finally, I surprised her three years ago with a Christmas gift of a fully paid holiday in Vegas - for just the two of us. She couldn't turn it down - it was a gift! No excuses - just "we're going in February". Period.
It was the best time either of us ever had! I've been to Vegas many times, so I did a bit of tour-guiding for her.
We certainly went to a few bars and had a few drinks, we saw some shows, we did a little gambling and better than all of that, we both found out a lot about each other! Because of the 24/7 life in Vegas, we did what we wanted, when we wanted, no schedules. It was a riot, watching my Mom have a blast doing things she wouldn't have dreamed of at home. Walking down the Strip at 2PM sipping on a yard long margarita? Sitting at a blackjack table and pushing those chips in like a pro? Shopping in stores that were horrendously expensive,& trying on clothes that we would never dream of wearing anywhere but Vegas? Sleeping in past 11am after staying out to some unknown hour the night before? Just wandering around taking in all the sights (why does it seem to take forever to get to that hotel that's just down the block)?
We spent more time together and did more talking over those few days than we probably had in years. Even today, we still start laughing when we talk about our "adventures". Our photo album is always out and the memories in it are great! Can't wait till we go again - we're making plans for later this year to celebrate her 75th birthday - and yes, we are leaving the hubbies at home again!
Waiting for those Lazy Beach Days!!

Yep....Charleston.

Sooooo much to do. There's B&B's all downtown...and a nice Doubletree right in the old market...or Charleston Place.....

Walking tours....the Market. The old homes, the History....

Just beautiful....

But..

Can be bitter cold in February....

You just never know.

It's my hometown...I grew up there.

My daughter and I are going to New York over Easter break for her 16th birthday. Some other mother/daughters are going with us. (Lindsey's birthday is March 25, her friend's is March 24.) We haven't really planned it all out yet but I know we are going to have a great time!!!

Good luck to you and your mom. Wherever you go, I hope you have a great time!!!

Thanks everyone.
I think we are going to San Diego, flying from Midway. Renting a convertible and visiting all the main tourist attractions in SD. (She was born there, but hasn't been back since she was a newborn). Do a trip up the coast in the convertible and then back in time to fly back to the cold cold Midwest!

Oh yeah GO PACK GO . . . gotta root for those Southern Miss grads whenever we get a chance! :P

San Diego is a wonderful choice. The old town area is great. I drove the Pacific Coast from La to SD once and while not a "must do" is isn't a bad trip.
