A fascinating article by the Bill Simmons, especially the paragraph about October 16th.

Byrd's rested and ready. OTOH, if Beckett can pull this out, then we have Lester for game 7. I have to believe the next game will be like the last, pitch anyone at any time, as they did with Papelbon last night in the 7th. There is no more tomorrow to save for.aeroparrot wrote:Interesting point. On the subject of Beckett, considering how he has pitched recently, if you were a manager, how "short of a leash" would you have Beckett on?drunkpirate66 wrote:kitty wrote: well, you can thank the Rays for that...the long inning at the top of the 6th, with the colder conditions made it impossible for him to come out in the 7th inning. That, and maybe the Rays were just a little too cocky, not thinking they needed him!
Now here is the question . . . Beckett is, atleast right now, scheduled game 6. Why! Lester goes on normal rest. Lester is by far the better pitcher. If Beckett stinks in game 7 then you have an entire off season of pitchers to use. Everyone pitches game 7 if needed.I am more curious to see how many innings Papelbon could go if needed. He was a 200 inning + top of the rotation prospect for years. I bet he could go 3 - 4 full innings if he had to.
Papplebon could go 3 innings but they would never allow him. In game 2 he only threw 18 pitches in 2 innings but they took him out and brought in Mike "Gas Can" Timlin.... Papplebon goes 2-inning max.
Last night in the top of the 9th when Masterson came in and they showed the only pitchers left for the Red Sox were Timlin, Lopez and Byrd was i the only one who got a sick feeling in my stomach that if this game went past the 9th the Sox were in trouble?

HERE COME THE RED SOX.
You just KNOW they're going to win this thing.
I swear, I don't trust those C.S.ers.
They NEVER go away & die like they're SUPPOSED to.
1986 vs. the Angels-behind 3 games to 1, they end up winning the next 3.
2004 vs. the Yankees-behind 3 games to 0, they end up winning the next 4.
2007 vs. the Indians-behind 3 games to 1, they end up winning the next 3.
Last night, behind 7-0 in the seventh inning-they win the damn thing.
I DON'T trust those c.s.ers, and, again, you KNOW they'll win it all now.
Especially with Beckett & Lester pitching-those two are untouchable. What happened to Beckett in his loss the other night was a fluke and nothing more.

HaHa you are trying the reverse jinx... you forgot that in 1999 they trailed Cleveland 2-0 in the ALDS and won that series 3-2 and did it again in 2003 against Oakland who they also trailed 2-0 and won the series 3-2.Wino you know wrote:HERE COME THE RED SOX.

My heart says the Red Sox but my brain says TB, they had 2 1/2 bad innings yesterday in what otherwise has been a great series by them. Unless the Red Sox can control the TB bats they are in trouble. Too many things have to go right for the Red Sox, coolstandings.com says the Red Sox have a 22% chance of winning the series in 7 and I agree.

Not trying to reverse anything.
I know Josh Beckett all too well, going back to 2003. (When he ruined my October TWICE-once against the Cubs, and once against the Yankees).
I wasn't at all impressed with him then. I think I was more P.O.ed than anything else and spent the next few years saying how "over rated" he is.
But the last two years with the Red Sox, I've really come to respect him.
If anyone besides Beckett & Lester were pitching the next couple games, I'd agree with you-it would be Tampa Bay as the clear favorite.
But with those two, my money is on the (UGH) Red Sox.
Good pitching & good defense, remember? That's not even taking into account the bats of Youklis, Ortiz, and Jason Bay.
If I were the manager of the Red Sox, I'd be saying we have the Devil Rays right where we want them.
