Xcaret.....To tour or not to tour??

Heading to Playa Del Carmen in early May. I'm interested in going to Xcaret. My question is should I do the guided package/tour thing or just get my own transportation and go there myself. Thinking that could be a MUCH more affordable way to go!

What's you pholks feedback on this place?

I wanted to go there when we were in Tulum last March but never got around to it because there was so much to do. I used this message board a lot before heading down there and still post there.

Very easy to get yourself there and pay your own way in. You don't need to go with a tour group and be on their schedule!

Just go. You don't have to be tied down to a tour operator's schedule if you wanted to leave early or whatever. You can rent a car very cheap, like 30-40 bucks a day.

Plus, if you want to see the night show, you pretty much have to go on your own, as the tours usually leave before the show/dinner thing starts.
