Nicotine Patches
Has anyone had any luck with these. Due to a surgery I had today, I probably wont be able to smoke for a few days. So me needing nicotine so I can function correctly, went out and got some of those NicoDermCQ patches.
Worked for a while. Its going on almost 8 hours now, and im starting to get a nicotine fit.
Is this common??

Phin power for the nic fits..
Probably just end up popping a few Vicodin's in a lil while after I finish eating dinner. Least that will knock me out so I wont worry about smoking.

I used the patch when I quit smoking 7 years ago. The hardest part about it is keeping them lit. j/k
Seriously, when I quit I used Wellbutrin and the patch. The physiology is this: nicotine restricts the blood vessels, the carbon monoxide in the cigarette smoke reduces the blood's ability to move oxygen to the brain/heart at the same time restricting the vessels even more. So smoking while on the patch can have fatal side effects. So I only used the patch as a deterrent (or so I thought). One day a couple weeks into my process I forgot the patch. No biggie, but my brain was screaming "Now we can have a smoke, come on, just one!!!!" I wore the patch for another 6 weeks or so and, as I said before, I have not had a cigarette in 7 years (1/14/01).
Bottom line: if you do the patch, don't smoke. And just because you have removed the patch, the transdermal effects do not stop immediately.
FYI... I didn't give in to the government, I gave in to my health.
p.s. Pass the Vicodin!

Did you make it these first 24 hours?
If so, good for you!
If not, any ill effects?
Im ready to kill someone. I think I should be able to smoke in a lil while.
The longest i have gone in the past 16 years was about 2 weeks, and that was 15 years ago. Besides that I think the longest was 5 days, and only reason why i was in the hospital but I had the morphine drip going so I didn't know nothing

Don't know if yesterday's procedure had anything to do with not creating a suction in your mouth or not, but if so:Big Jimmy wrote:

Forget Connie's straw idea, and if you MUST smoke, try breathing the stuff in rather than "traditional" smoking technique.
It could make a big difference-if it was oral surgery.

Did you check with your doctor re: the patch? The restriction of blood vessels and increase in blood pressure associated with smoking also occurs when using the patch, so whatever the reason for not smoking after surgery likely would also apply to putting nicotine in your system via a patch.
By the way, wearing that patch overnight while you sleep has some interesting side effects in the form of intensified dreams in some people .... very cool (read the fine print).

I have never liked the patches. I am unable to smoke for awhile everyday due to new rules at work
so I use the lozenges they help with the nic fits and the oral fixation. I am also not trying to quit just make it thru a shift without killing someone
