Man says pickup truck on verge of passing million-mile mark
The Associated Press
MEDFORD — If he’s going to make history, Frank Oresnik wants to do it driving his old standby — the pickup truck that he says is on the verge of passing the 1 million mile mark.
Oresnik, of Catawba, took the 1991 Chevrolet Silverado to the Oil Ex-Change Quick Lube in Medford on Thursday for what he expects will be its last oil change and tuneup before hitting the magic number.
He said the truck is 1,200 miles from 1 million, and once he hits the mark he will retire the vehicle.
“I feel almost like the long-time NFL player as he goes into his last training camp knowing this is the end,” he said.
He credits proper maintenance and a good measure of luck for allowing the truck to roll up so many miles. He said he’s had more than 300 oil changes and tuneups at the Medford business, going in each 3,000 miles.
The truck has had four radiators, three gas tanks, five transmissions and six water pumps, but the engine has never been overhauled, he said.
Oresnik said his business delivering seafood from a Chicago supplier to customers in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan keeps him on the road 40 hours a week, putting on about 85,000 miles a year.
He bought the Silverado in June 1996 after the original owner put 41,000 miles on it.
Todd Vantassel, owner of the Quick Lube shop, said maintenance can keep a vehicle running longer, but Oresnik’s truck is extraordinary. General Motors and Shell are said to be interested in tearing the engine down and examining it.
“I think we can definitely learn something from it,” Vantassel said. “This was real-life driving, and with our climate you’re in the extremes.”

"Almost a year ago now, I posted about Wisconsin travelling salesman Peter Gilbert and his 1-million mile Saab. But even he must bow down in the mega-mileage stakes to 67-year-old Irv Gordon, a retired New York science teacher who bought his 1966 Volvlo P1800 coupe brand new and has clocked up over 2.6 million miles in it since. Gordon plans to keep going until he turns 72 and the car hits the 3 million mark - surely an unbeatable record. And even more impressive than the mileage figure is the condition of the car - barely a mark on it and with most of its original mechanical components still in use."
