"how to be totally dumb on international tv"

I was watching the Amazing Race on thursday night (not sure how long ago it was on the US tv) ...

The 6 remaining teams were in Kuwait and got their cards they had to fly to Mauritius .... apart from the fact that only one of the 6 teams had a clue how to pronounce it .....

There was two blonde models .... they went to the travel agent and asked to book tickets.... the agent said they would have to go to London first and then to Mauritius ..... one of the models said.........

"London - what country is that in" :o :o :o :o

NO they don't teach geography in the US. In fact many Americans are not sure where New England is, and recently it was reported that some thought they needed passports to go to New Mexico. If you aren't sure where St. Louis is, you are going to have an awfully hard time with London or Hong Kong.

They teach it in my daughter's middle school....and did in elementary as well. I always thought I had a pretty good handle of geography, but she's thrown a few of the latest African countries at me and I've had to go look them up!!

Last night we were at the little family pizza pub after my daughter's skating lesson and her and the bartender and her were playing what amounted to country trivia. He had a funny bar joke he tried on her and it didn't 'work' right for him because she picked some off the wall country (most people pick Denmark) ....they were too busy being smart alecks and trying to show each other up. It was pretty funny.

Now, some kids choose not to take advantage of the education that is available to them...but yes, they do teach geography.

They teach geography here. My 6th grader actually had a couple of worksheets today as a matter of fact....Her geography is more detailed than what my 3rd grader has, but he does some too....

Geography has always, ALWAYS been my favorite subject when I was in school all those years ago.

I didn't think they taught it anymore, but, apparently some here say that it is indeed still taught, and they would know.

While I did great in subjects like History, Geometry, Astronomy, etc, I always EXCELLED in Geography.

I do know for a fact that the U.S. students are taught practically NOTHING about Canada, Australia, etc., and that's a shame.

they do teach it - usually in the grade schools.

Right now many states have a basic skills assessment test that is required in the No Child Left Behind Act. Many teachers complain that in order for their school to meet the min required adequate yearly progress they must concentrate their courses on students passing the tests.

While this can be a good thing as it pretty much forces all school systems to maintain a minimum of education, it also can restrict what a teacher may introduce in their classes because of the reason stated above.

I have been to Mauritius (pronounced more-ish-is). Its in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar and is basically the "caribbean island" for Europeans. Interesting culture, all Indian but they speak French! Many inhabitants were forced to live there after being kicked off nearby Diego Garcia when the U.S. military decided to take over the island.

Recently I had 3 bogus charges appear on my credit card with infomation saying that it was a UK company based on the web address. I call my credit card company to dispute the charges and the woman asks (just to be sure) if I did make the charges. I told that although I had been in London 2 months prior that I did not make those specific charges. She actually said "Well London is not the UK." I was so dumbfounded that I could not even correct her.

I know .... I have been asked what coast Sydney is on

but the funniest is - numerous times I have been asked (this has nothing to do with Geography) - "what time of year do you celebrate christmas"

And I got asked it again on my last trip
