JB reference on "No Reservations"

I'm a huge fan of "Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations" on the Travel Channel. A repeat episode this afternoon was filmed in Miami, and Bourdain hopped on down to Key West. And I quote:

"...and although I despise the musical styling of Jimmy Buffett, I have a feeling I'm going to love this place."

and later...

"...I hope I never have to hear another verse of that crappy "Margaritaville" song."

Never ceases to amaze me how many people make fun of Jimmy or dog him, but at the end of the day they are aware enough of him to make appropriate references. Says a lot about his endurance in popular culture. I'm sure he laughs it off and thinks to himself, "Jokes on you, sucker, I'm an empire."

I love that show too! And I think you summed up Buffett's influence on our culture quite well! :D

I love this show and I saw this episode and LMAO when he said this! We do have to remember the source of the quote though Bourdain I think hates everyone! :D

Part of JB's appeal, at least for me, is that he's not concerned with what critics think of him. He makes music he likes and there just happen to be millions of like-minded people scattered around the earth that've stayed with him for decades. He's not in it to win awards and break sales records.

This is why I love Jimmy and despise Kanye West. Anybody that will storm out of an awards show because they don't win a subjectively-voted upon award has no business mingling in the adult world. And thus, Jimmy's appeal as the laid back Joe Sixpack singer-songwriter.

Bourdain's one of our favorites, too. He was probably just having one of his bad "flash-back" days.

Every day is one of those days with him. His sarcastic cynicism is one of the reasons I find him so hilarious and engaging. I hope "No Reservations" goes on forever, and that Anthony visits Australia soon!

I love that show too. I missed this episode. In the New Orleans episode he made fun of Emeril right to his face. So I guess Jimmy is on the list with Emeril and Rachel Ray.

It is amazing how a comment like that can totally ruffle my little parrot feathers. :D

Bourdain is a pompous so and so, but he is entertaining because he is so elitist. He should be called "distain" because of his attitude toward almost anything and anyone. I continue to watch anyway.

I don't think too much about him. ;) He makes me laugh, cooks good food, eats good food, goes to great places that I'd like to visit.... well, mostly. ;)

I am a huge fan of him. Hey he might not know that there are Jimmy songs other then the few that most college students have cranked up at Parties.

I realy can't blame him. After spending a week in KW during MOTM and hearing 500 singers/groups/street preformers sing M'ville I also start feeling that
"...I hope I never have to hear another verse of that crappy "Margaritaville" song."

His Hawaii show tonight talked quite a bit about Buffett in the beginning.

"He's personally ruined my life..."

He visited Bailey's where the owner said Jimmy Buffett once bought a vintage $4,000 aloha shirt. So Anthony bought one for $3,000.

Yes, he was whining about Margaritaville, too. He has heard that in every lousy bar he's been in.... said that Jimmy's been everywhere before him

 I sort of took it as he was joking and that maybe there are friends, not sure, though. :-?

I don't think he's entirely serious...

I heard him reference Buffett on another show too, not the Miami one. So he's definitely in his subconscious. 8)

Not a big fan of his, he sets off my "smarmy meter".

The other show where he referenced Buffett was the Cleveland episode, believe it or not. It was right after the scene where wet-suited people were winter surfing in Lake Erie.

So yes, the Hawaii rant was Bourdain's third on Buffett (at least). Kind of interesting - I've only watched four full episodes of "No Reservations" and he's metioned Jimmy in three of them. I guess I tend to gravitate towards all things Jimmy.

I don't know about the friends part but I think people make far too much out of these sort of comments especially when they're very clearly made in jest.

The real irony here is that "No Reservations" is a show whose format probably mirrors any of a number of Jimmy's vacations. They're just filming them for consumption by the masses. I don't normally watch this show, but I caught the second half of the Hawaii episode tonight and liked it enough to watch the Argentina ep that followed. I haven't watched enough to decide whether he is a true traveller trying to make the world a little smaller for his viewers, or just another pompous American giving foreign cultures a reason to be wary of us, but one thing he said during the Argentina Ep made me think he is at least speaking his honest opinions. "Any food that puts off red grease is good." Truer words have rarely been spoken. And if I ever get to Hawaii, I'm definitely checking out that Tiki Bar he went to by the airport 8)

To each their own.
