I think a lot of depends on what your body is already used to. I had a cousin who worked a number of the years in the restaurant business and therefore got used to late hours. Years after he left and was working a more traditional (read 9-5) schedule. He'd still have dinner at 11 at night because that was what he got used to. Treat it like jet-lag, and try to go to sleep at the time you feel you need to for your new schedule, even if that means going to bed long before you feel tired, or staying up later so that the time you wake up at is in line with when you need to be going to work. (Flip side is go to bed when you have and and wake up when you have and have all that time before you go to work.)
Take me for what I am, a star newly emerging.
I accept the new found man, and I set the twilight reeling.

I have been working at around five for two and a half years..

any tips on changing shift times??
to borrow a line..
I will be getting home about the time I used to go to bed..

so stay up all night the friday, saturday and sunday prior to the change?
(I do have the luck of leaving Friday and starting Monday.)
so I have three nights to adjust.
What I'd do is stay up the first night as late as you think you would on a work night and just set the alarm to get up at whatever time you'll get up. That way come monday you'll be ahead of the adjustment game

Good advice Connie! THat is what i do when i switch shifts. I work mostly nights but every once in a while i do some day shifts!

Good luck with the new shift Santa!!!! :D

When I was in college I had a part-time job in a supermarket. The only way they would give me more hours in the summer was if I was willing to work midnights. On my day off I would just stay up all day after I got home from work, then go to bed at night like a normal person. When I had to go back to work, I'd get up in the morning and I'd be up for 24 hours until I got home from work the next morning. Never had a problem. Of course, I was 20 years old.
