OK so in ten days I will go from 5AM to Noon start times for work..
I have been working at around five for two and a half years..
any tips on changing shift times??
to borrow a line..
I will be getting home about the time I used to go to bed..
so stay up all night the friday, saturday and sunday prior to the change?
(I do have the luck of leaving Friday and starting Monday.)
so I have three nights to adjust.

So what's the problem? Just go to bed when you get home, no change.
But seriously, no suggestions, just sounds like a big ol pile of shift work.

What I'd do is stay up the first night as late as you think you would on a work night and just set the alarm to get up at whatever time you'll get up. That way come monday you'll be ahead of the adjustment game

I recommend staying up late on the days off prior to your new shift and hopefully sleeping later as a result. This should help you reset your internal 'clock' to help you sleep when you should and be awake and alert when you should. You probably already know that this change in your sleep schedule will take a few weeks to really take hold.
I advise you to party late on each of the three nights before the shift change.

Well I guess making yourself tired so that you sleep in later would be the key. But I don't think staying up all night for 3 nights is very healthy.
Most likely, even if you stay up a lot later each night over the weekend, your still probably gonna wake up around your normal time come Monday.
You'll probably just have to deal with being a little tired during your shift for the first few days, but not crashing when you get home.

I suggest Dark and Stormys, Shiner Bock, and heavy dark drapes in your
bedroom.

I work a 7 pm to 2-or-3-ish a.m. shift, but on the "off" weeks, which come around once a month or so, if I am not taking holidays, I work a late-morning or afternoon shift like your new one. On those weeks, I miss having a nap, and I don't go to bed early enough.... so I'm a poor example.
But, even at my advanced age (and remember, I'm older than Jimmy--by a few days) I find it only takes a few days to get the old clock reset.
Good luck.

by Wino you know
I change shifts every eight weeks.
For eight weeks I work from 6:00 AM-6:00 PM.
Then for eight weeks I work from 6:00 PM-6:00 AM.
It's actually harder for me to work the 6 AM-6 PM shift.
I can never discipline myself to get to bed at a decent hour the night before to get the proper sleep I need to make it throug the day.
I guess that's the key-make sure you get enough rest and on your last day off before you start your work week, maybe just hang around the house for the day and get to bed at a time that will allow you to get AT LEAST six hours sleep. (8 preferably).
Don't be a walking corpse like yours truly.

That doesn't sound too bad. You can stay up later then do your business/visiting/shopping in the mornings. The hubby used to be on the night shift (11pm to 7am) years ago. That was horrible, he was a zombie. I'd have to keep myself AND the kids quiet while he slept during the day.

Then he went on the afternoon shift (3pm to 11pm) which was hard for socializing. Now he's on a 12 hour shift for 5 days a week....sometimes he doesn't see daylight for three days. Needless to say, he can't wait for retirement.
