I have never experienced that!!!
Some of the service stations here have what they call a "full service island" (as opposed to self service island), where an attendant will pump the gas for you and check your air and oil for .10 cents per gallon more.
To me, it's not only more costly, but just plain lazy.

Living in Jersey, I can't understand why I pay more for gas out of state and have to pump it myself. Tank of gas is $45 for my Blazer, and the same for the Volvo although my wife gets much better mileage from the Volvo.

Higher gas taxes in other states is the short answer. But don't worry, Corzine has plans to take care of that!

In New Jersey and Oregon it is illegal to pump gas yourself.

My first job in high school was as a pump jockey. A great first job for a gear head like myself. I remember the regular gas (leaded) was 48 cents/gallon. :o :D Self service stations were just starting to appear.

I know of several independent stations near my home and near work that are the cheapest places around and are full service.

That's fine, but if that's the case, they shouldn't be able to charge you more, I.M.O.

48 cents? WOW!
When I got my drivers license, gas was 28 cents per gallon for regular and 32 cents for premium.
When it was raised to 36 cents, it was like total anarchy.

It should scare everyone that if a few politicians had their way, the federal gasoline tax would be increased by 50 cents per gallon, but, apparently, there are those who don't have a problem with that. Any kook who feels the cure for the non-existent energy crisis is to raise the price of energy belongs in the rubber room.

Although it's been a while since I purchased gas in Oregon, as I recall it really was about the same as the prices at self serves in Washington. Basically all they do is pump gas - no check the oil, tires, coolant etc...
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

Yes, sadly, the days of "SERVICE" stations are long over.
For that matter, so is customer service nearly everywhere, but that's another topic for another day.

I'm not sure if it's still open or not but there used to be one near my office in Dallas. I used it several times when I knew I needed air or oil and didn't want to get my business clothes dirty.

There's a few still around, but they're disappearing faster than my angelic good looks.

Gas is $3.09 here in Vermont, and that's the cherapest I've seen it in awhile...was up to $3.25 for awhile......costs about $55 to fill my Jeep for another 200 miles. I miss my old Accord that used to get 350 miles on the same tank of gas

My first job was around 1974 during the OPEC oil embargo when everyone freaked out and service stations were allowed to pump gas to cars with odd number last digits on their license plates only on odd days of the month and even number license plates only on even number days of the month. My job went from "full service" (check the oil, water in the car battery, tire air pressure, clean the windshields, etc.) to waking up people who had fallen asleep in their cars in the lines that stretched around the block to get gas.

We live 75 miles from the coastal town of Cherbourg, in France. 2 or 3 times a year I get the ferry over there from Poole, UK, and fill my car up for about one third the cost of fuel in the UK. While we are there, we also fill up with wine & cheese etc
