Midtown Manhattan - (In or Convenient To)

Post by FunkHouse9 »

I'm looking for an acceptable hotel for as cheap as possible either in Midtown Manhattan or something easily accessible to there. My wife, (soon-to-be) newborn and I are hopefully going up for a wedding in late April and can't find much that we can afford. I'm really hoping to find something in the $150/night range which I know is probably impossible for midtown. The wedding is near Broadway & W 36th St.

I'm willing to stay out of the area and take a subway in, but we are going to have a newborn in tow, so easy transportation would be a plus. I don't know anything about the target area or what surrounding areas are viable and inexpensive options.

Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Whenever I have to stay in NYC, I stay here. Usually about $200 a night, and that is the best I have found in Midtown. Directly smack dab in the middle of Times Square, and this will be only about six blocks or so from your wedding. Some NY'ers on here may have some better answers for ya though :D

Try this place http://www.riversidetowerhotel.com It's not too far from idtown, a couple of blocks to subway, pretty easy to find cabs in the area. The rooms are small and laid out in funky ways, and the oddest part is I think all the beds are singles, but it's cheap and clean.

Thanks. I'll check those out. I'm guessing I'll end up staying outside the city since $200 a night for 2-3 nights is just going to be too much money.

I also have to figure out how we're getting there. I've been considering taking the train up. If I were to drive, does anyone know what parking costs per day up there? I'm sure none of the hotels in that area include parking for guests, right?

It can't hurt to go to priceline.com and attempt to get a room at the rate you are willing to pay. Make sure you select 4* or better.

I'll have to consider that. I am a little afraid of doing that blind bidding type stuff, but I guess it could pay off.

stayed there this summer. 2 blocks from the 79th St. Subway station on Broadway, and you can ride the Red/1-2-3 trains straight down Broadway to 36th.

You might try the Helmsley Middletowne. Not sure of their rates but we used to stay there when we worked for a company that had an office in NYC. The rates were pretty good then. There is also a parking garage right across the street. Call the hotel they can give you the parking rate if you want to drive.

The Helmsley Middletowne is on 48th, I think, and 2 blocks east of Park Avenue. About 8 blocks or so to Grand Central, about 8 blocks to Rockefeller Center. Good walking distance to Times Square. About 8 blocks to United Nations. You can also take the Grand Central subway shuttle to the subway mainline to get to other spots.

have you tried craigslist for vacation rentals?

http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/vac/

or you could try hotwire, priceline, or easyclicktravel.com/lastminutetravel.com.

here is a site to help you identify and bid for hotels:

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm going to try to take some time this weekend to go through these and see what my best option is. Hopefully I can find a scenario that will let me pull this off without breaking myself financially.

I stayed at the Belleclaire a few years ago - make sure you are in the remodeled section - the others are a nightmare - one of the worst hotel experiences of my life!!!!!!!!

I have stayed at Grand Union - it is the best of the budget ones I have found. Small rooms but clean. Lot of Europeans use this hotel. It is at 34th street, 2 blocks from Broadway.

they are just about done with the remodels by the looks of it, they were working on the exterior, but the rooms were good. I don't know. I am just going with personal experience.

You may want to check this place out, La Quinta. I never stayed here, but it's right around the corner from my new office.

I found it searching for bars in the area, and this place has a rooftop one.

Don't know if they have availability or not but it is just a few blocks from time square. Great location and great rooms.

It's not bad, although the price has gone up significantly since it first opened three or four years ago. I got a room there for $99.00 a night when it first opened. Now it's mid 200's and up.

Anybody gonna be in mid-town over the Memorial Day weekend?
The fam is going up to see a show (Wicked) on Sunday, but we will be in town all weekend.

You around Monday? The girl and I have no plans yet, maybe a trip to Coney Island???

OK, here's a plug for a mid-town hotel that solved my problems.

At almost $300 per night, the Skyline Hotel on Tenth Avenue at W 49th wasn't the cheapest hotel in Manhattan, but it's just a few blocks from the Lincoln Tunnel, they have cheap parking for guests ($10/day, but no in & out), there's an indoor pool, it's near plenty of great restaurants, and within easy walking distance of Times Square. It is actually two buildings joined by an enclosed walkway on the second floor. The new building is quite spacious and modern -- we had a good-size room with two Q beds, full size desk and chair, spacious bathroom, plus an extra vanity table with chair and mirror, in-room safe and a fridge, as well as a modern flat screen TV with many features found in newer hotels. (The old building seemed a little quaint, but we didn't see inside any of the rooms.) The desk staff, concierge, bellmen and car porters were polite and quite willing to be helpful. The security guard at the entrance made us feel comfortable, not suspicious.

From Baltimore to Mid-town, the drive was less than three hours, and as soon as we came out of the Lincoln Tunnel, we followed the easy directions to the hotel, with no traffic or parking problems. By the way, the previously dreaded Jersey Turnpike was a piece of cake over Memorial day weekend.
