I think it's pretty damn cool, although I'd like to see the surroundings as part of the overall considerationMarnin Grita Guy wrote:My hometown is building a new museum and it is rather controversial in design. It is growing on people though as it nears completion.
Your thoughts?...
I do think that is a pretty sharp designbuffettbride wrote:Same guy? This is the Denver Art Museum...

Cuz I never did understand what the heck this is all about.
The museum chronicles Seattle's history and contributions to modern popular music, and also allows the visitor to experiment hands-on with all sorts of rock instruments.
The shot is taken from atop the Space Needle located just a block away.
The architect is world renowned Frank Gehry, an iconic modernist of our generation, and designer of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, and the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain.
Here's another view of the EMP, a VERY COOL place to spend a whole day

I like it, but the question is: does it fit in with the neighborhood, or does it stick out like a sore thumb? As cool as progressive architecture may be, if it overwhelms where it is, it's not a good thing, imho.

True, but neighborhoods also are constantly in flux. My concern, often, is also whether the building is built on enough land to lend a sense of perspective to it.popcornjack wrote:I like it, but the question is: does it fit in with the neighborhood, or does it stick out like a sore thumb? Oh it's definitely a double edged sort of thing. Something like this could be a spark for an area, but, and this comes from living in an area where a neighborhood may be populated with buildings that are easily 100+ years old, you don't want to artificially create an environment.ejr wrote:True, but neighborhoods also are constantly in flux. And I think your second point is even more important.

I think you and I are in agreement--it is interesting to, when you can, read or listen to the architect talking about their plan, specifically when they talk about place, and how they view the location and general environment. One of my favorite buildings is the expansion to the Milwaukee County Art Museum by Santiago Calitrava (http://mam.org/thebuilding/index.htm) It is an amazing piece of architecture, and it was fascinating to hear the architect talk about his concept and vision for the space.popcornjack wrote:Oh it's definitely a double edged sort of thing. It is also home to a museum of Science Fiction. But that doesn't explain why the building looks so damned ugly.Lightning Bolt wrote:That's the overhead view of the Experience Music Project in Seattle WA, a museum commisioned by Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen.pair8head wrote: When you all are done with that would someone like to explain this to me?
