Brett Favre to Retire.

News just broke that quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, #4, Brett Favre is retiring.

He will be great on TV, either in the booth or as a analysis.

Chris Mortensen reported that Favre, who wanted the Packers to obtain Randy Moss when he was a free agent last season, had once again pushed for Moss to join the Packers. Favre had spoken to Moss late last week and was willing to commit to more than just this season if Moss and the Packers could come to an agreement. But the Packers did not pursue Moss, who re-signed with the Patriots on Monday.

Where does GB go from here?

Brett will be great wherever he goes. GB apparently goes to Aaron Rodgers, who looked pretty good against Dallas in relief of an injured Favre. He actually MAY be the guy, but if I was GB, I'd be looking for some QB insurance somewhere...

On the topic of Favre... in Fall 06, me and a buddy made the pilgrimage to Lambeau Field to see Favre play the Rams. What a game, and what an experience.

SO glad now that I went ahead and shelled out the $$ to see Favre play (just once) at Lambeau.

This is a sad day.

If I didn't have to work today I would be at home with a bottle of something strong. I was at his last game at the NFC Championship, my first game ever, so I have that going for me.

That's realy sad. I never thought that the "business" side of football is what would end up to be the straw that broke the camel's back and force Brett's decision.

For his sake, I'd rather see it this way than him ending up with a career-ending injury that would leave him hobbled....

well, we all knew it was coming eventually...

I am just sad for my 6-year-old son..he loves the Packers!! Hopefully they can produce another legand

In the meantime, my son has a giant 6 foot FATHEAD, life-sized sticker of Brett Favre on his bedroom wall to always remember him by!

I agree. Brett's such a competitor with never say die attitude. I guess he's tired of fighting the front office, the business side, to get a proven play maker. Jennings, Drive and Robinson are very good WR's, but giys like Moss don't fall from trees everyday. I think Brett must have thought Moss would be enough to get back to the Superbowl and the Packer's told him no. What more does the guy have to play for? He owns every NFL record for a QB. Amazing career and obviously a first round HOF.

UPDATE: Favre speaks of being 'tired mentally'

ESPN.com reporter Chris Mortensen wrote that he received a voice message from quarterback Brett Favre explaining that his decision to retire was based on his unwillingness to prepare for a season that he couldn't be assured would end in a Super Bowl victory.

According to Mortensen, Favre acknowledged that he felt he could play another year.

"I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired," Favre said.

"If I felt like coming back -- and Deanna (his wife) and I talked about this -- the only way for me to be successful would be to win a Super Bowl. To go to the Super Bowl and lose, would almost be worse than anything else. Anything less than a Super Bowl win would be unsuccessful," Favre said in the message.

"I know it shouldn't feel unsuccessful, but the only way to come back and make that be the right decision would be to come back and win a Super Bowl and honestly the odds of that, they're tough. Those are big shoes for me to fill, and I guess it was a challenge I wasn't up for. "

I'm with you. There wouldn't have been a sadder way for Brett to end his career than to be carried off the field on a stretcher, or to end up sitting on the bench holding his throbbing head (think Joe Montana.)

This way, it feels like Brett got the Packers back into legitimate contention. Then, when his understudy seemed ready (Aaron Rodgers vs. Dallas) he passed the baton.

Still, sure am gonna miss #4...

Exactly my thoughts. I would always watch a Green Bay Packers game to see him enjoying himself (and to see my son's fraternity brother play...Chad Clifton). Gah.

It's always a sad day for football when one of the greatest ever says goodbye.

Brett Favre is one of the greatest ever.
That's not arguable.
And that's coming from a BEARS fan.
