The classic Mai Tai...getting most of the calls to the bullpen around here these days. Accept no substitutes.
2 oz Appletons Estate Reserve
1 1/2 oz FRESH lime juice
1/2 oz Orange Curacao
1/4 oz simple syrup
1/2 oz Orgeat
Shake for 30 seconds or so in a shaker 2/3 full of ice, serve over crushed ice with a mint sprig for garnish.
The remnants remain in the glass next to me even as we 'speak'.

I agree with Chad3, the El Dorado 15 is brilliant! Other favs are Appleton 21, Zacapa 23, Mount Gay XO.....the list goes on and on, but I'm getting thirsty.

My favorite rum with coke is still Pyrat
Flor de Cana 18 is mighty fine all by itself, or maybe with a single ice cube!

Cockspur has an entire line of nice rum, but the 12 is, in my opinion, the tastiest of the bunch. Def. worth a sample.

Curious that most entries here say that the 15 are great, but the 12 is almost as good (really is it much better?) and the prices are much cheaper. I'll have to say more rum in the 12 year and less barrels saved for the next three could make me much happier from the El Dorado brand. I'll have to try more 12's.
Chad
Oh, and forget Coke, try and of these with a good ginger beer (I'm talking hot here, not that Barret's garbage). Goya is my go to brand unless you can get my local hosmer mountain with real cane. Much better, and just use a splash.

Just tried Rhum Barbancourt 5-Star...I love it. Has anyone tried their 15 year old? Is it worth trying?

both the 8 and the 15 year are worth trying... especially with a good cigar in hand.SharkysMV1 wrote:Just tried Rhum Barbancourt 5-Star...I love it. Has anyone tried their 15 year old? Is it worth trying?

Relaxing tonight with a glass of change from a friend of mine:
Ginger beer and Goslings (wait for it) 151!!! Gives a bit of the kick, but still a rum taste and ginger coming through (goya).
Different twist on one of the norms.

We just ordered two bottles of Ron Diplomatico Exclusive Reserve, the Angostura 1919 and the 8 year old Barbancourt. Our usual liquor store didn't have and didn't think they could get the Diplomatico, so I found a link for drinkupNY.com- got all four bottles for $105, including shipping.
Their prices are so cheap if they get it here before Memorial Day I'll still be happy!

if the Diplomatico comes in a short, squat, round green bottle, I tried that at Stars and it was good. actually, the remains (last three shots) made it thru airport security in flask form, in the inside pocket of my jacket without raising an eye.Coconuts wrote:We just ordered two bottles of Ron Diplomatico Exclusive Reserve, the Angostura 1919 and the 8 year old Barbancourt. That's the one. I can't believe it's less than $30 per bottle! I'm still inching toward actually drinking straight liquor, but I really like it neat.RinglingRingling wrote:if the Diplomatico comes in a short, squat, round green bottle, I tried that at Stars and it was good. actually, the remains (last three shots) made it thru airport security in flask form, in the inside pocket of my jacket without raising an eye.Coconuts wrote:We just ordered two bottles of Ron Diplomatico Exclusive Reserve, the Angostura 1919 and the 8 year old Barbancourt. All this talk about Diplomatico, and I just had to pour some!
I like it mixed with Diet Dr Pepper.
It has a totally different taste than most rums when mixed with DDP,
very smooth and sort of soft caramel-ly flavor.
