With Winter coming(well, for some of us...... ), here's an interesting recipe I found on the Ministry of Rum site:
Rob's No Freeze, No Batter Hot Buttered Rum
This was the result of some experimentation, back-engineering of a commercial recipe, and some wise counsel at a spice shop. Reviews have been... glowing.
2 c. white sugar
Pusser's rum to taste
1 t. nutmeg
½ t. ground cloves
1 t. ground cardamom
½ t. allspice
¼ t. dried lemon peel
1 t. cinnamon
1 T. molasses
3 c. water
½ t. vanilla
Combine the dry ingredients very thoroughly together in a sealable container, it is VERY IMPORTANT to use a very hot, spicy cinnamon, such as Vietnamese Cassia, to keep the wonderful flavor of cinnamon from being overwhelmed by the other heavy hitters. The mix does NOT need to be refrigerated, you should keep it sealed to keep the spices strong and fresh. To prepare four small-ish servings, mix and heat the water, molasses, six tablespoons of the mix, and the vanilla to the point of boiling, but DO NOT boil. Do not serve in metal tankards, hands will fry! In each mug or tankard, put as much Pusser's Royal Navy
Rum as you want, two jiggers is rather ample. Pour in the hot mixture, melt a tablespoon of butter on top of each mug. This is sweet, rich, and soothing, just the thing for a cold winter's night or the dogwatch. Best!

I just tried Gosling's recently introduced Stormy ginger beer for the first time when making my beloved Dark 'n Stormy........
Maybe I shouldn't make a judgment after just one drink, but I think I still prefer Barritt's Bermuda Stone ginger beer.....

After more extensive taste tests (work, work, work).......Gosling's ginger beer is growing on me, but I'd still give Barritt's the top prize for now.

Everyday or for something special
Havana Club - the original, not the Bacardi imposter
Myers dark
Mount Gay Extra Old
Appleton V/X
Flor de Cana - the Gold is very good and Gran Reserve is even better
Gosling's & ginger beer - Dark & Stormy
Pusser's
Barbancourt
Westerhall
Cruzan
My wife made an excellent pork roast in rum last night. Yum!
Yep...Havana Club dark 7 year...the best as far as I'm concerned.
I'm trying to find something close.
Not a fan of the Myers dark....I was thinking that would be close...but very strong on the molasses... taste. Not that I mind molasses...I use black strap in my coffee as sweetener.
Anyone try Brugal dark?..has a gold net on it...? I remember liking that on a trip to the Dominican. Haven't had it in years.

Well...I tried another nice rum over the weekend.
I found that Flor de Cana Grand Reserve 7 year dark is very close (my memory being what it is.) to Havana Club 7 y/o.
Nice to sip straight.
I haven't ried it in a mixed drink yet. Not a harsh molasses burn to it. Smooth with a little bite to the finish.

Forgot what the Brugal Anejo tasetd like so I bought a bottle last weekend.
Good sipping rum...sort of "light" taste. Lighter than I really care for. Haven't had a mixed drink with it yet.
All said, I'd buy again. I haven't tried the Extra Viejo yet... now *that* looks more my speed.
Anyone tried the EV?

Last June we vacationed in Bermuda and our hotel had a rum tasting sponsored by Goslings. I've been a Goslings fan for a long time......it makes the best Dark n' Stormy. We got to sip and enjoy all of their rums. One in particular was very good (with the emphasis on "very"), but done in only small batches. None is exported. For the life of me, I cannot remember the name (it wasn't the Gold or Old Rum blend), but it would be worth it to visit Bermuda again just to have some more......
Anyone familiar with this secret formula??????

Bermuda and the Gosling's distillery are on my bucket list of places to visit. Black Seal is my standard and the Old Rum is the nectar of the gods as far as I'm concerned. I would love to try the "secret" recipe too. A couple years ago, the boss gave me a bottle of the Old Rum for part of my Christmas bonus.....good boss!

If you're a rum fan (and aren't we all) then you should try the Conch Republic if you find yourself in the Tampa Bay/St. Pete/Clearwater area. It's across from the beach on North Redington Beach and they have an extensive rum selection and they have some kind of tasting special on their menu. It's a lot of fun. You can check out their selection, here:

I get down to Key West once or twice a year and The Rum Barrel is always one of my first stops. I'm sad that the Pirate Soul museum is no longer there though. Last time I was down there I found that the bar maid at the Chart Room makes a kick ass Dark n Stormy too!

Also, I haven't been there in a very long time so I don't know if it is still as great as I remember, but I have to give a hat tip to Doc Ford's Rum Bar and Grille in Sanibel, FL for introducing me to The Black Seal one fine evening a few years ago.
